As I write this, it’s 1 January 2026 — and also my 47th rotation around the sun. A new year and a new personal cycle, which feels fitting after a year that asked me to slow down, shed, and realign before rising again.

A few days ago, my wife and I found a new café in our local area, and sat down together for our annual review session.

No spreadsheets.
No goal-setting theatre.
Just coffee, pen, and questions printed on A4 sheets.

As I write this, I’m not in “new year, new plan” mode.

I’m in a quieter place. The kind that comes after you’ve stopped forcing clarity and started paying attention to what the year actually left you with.

2025 wasn’t a year I could summarise neatly. It didn’t fit into tidy metrics or obvious milestones. It asked different questions — slower ones — and didn’t rush the answers.

This newsletter is my attempt to capture that pause.
Not to close the year with certainty, but to honour it with honesty.

💡 Perspective: What 2025 was really about

For a while, it was tempting to label 2025 as a “hard year” and move on.

Here’s what that actually looked like in practice:

• A loss of significant income in the first half of the year

• Physical challenges that forced me to slow down, whether I wanted to or not

• Ongoing questions about whether hustle culture still has a place in my life

• Family responsibilities that required patience, presence, and restraint — sometimes more than I felt ready for

At times, it felt personal.
Like I’d lost momentum.
Like I’d made the wrong calls.
Like I was somehow falling behind while everyone else kept moving.

A few days ago, whilst driving the car home after a lovely lunch catch-up with some artist friends I hadn’t seen in years, I listened to Melanie Benson’s year-end business reflection. Melanie described 2025 as a year where things didn’t necessarily stop working — they just stopped feeling right. She felt the year felt heavy instead of expansive.

That framing made a light bulb go off in my head.

This morning, I watched Colin and Samir’s video titled “This was a hard year”, and I appreciated their reflection of how 2025 was a year of rebuilding and reinvention for them, grounded in real loss (their new homes were burnt down during the LA fires at the start of the year).

What stood out the most was when they shared a quote from their interview with Reid Hoffman:

“Turn crisis into opportunity. Never waste a crisis.”

And Colin went on to say, “That hit me like a ton of bricks… amidst how crazy this year has been, it’s actually a huge opportunity to reinvent.”

All of this has helped me see 2025 not as a year of failure, but as a year of recalibration.

🚀 Progress: What actually moved the needle

If I strip the year back to what genuinely mattered, a few things stand out.

Anchors from 2025:

• Completing a Certificate IV in Screen and Media (Journalism) at TAFE Ultimo — and finishing it, not just starting

• Making new friends and media industry contacts at TAFE

• Rebuilding confidence through a tangible media portfolio

• Recording and preparing for the release of the first episode of Migrant Wealth Builders

• Winning Best General Podcast (MWV pilot episode) and Best Radio Piece (for our group effort) at the TAFE Media student showcase night (still feels surreal)

• In-person and virtual convos with good people.

Each of these mattered for different reasons, but together they confirmed something important to me:

My skills still translate, even when I change lanes.

A few quieter wins mattered just as much:

• LinkedIn posts reaching over 220,000 people combined — not from posting more, but from saying the right thing in my own voice

• Finally working through years of overdue tax returns with my accountant (and my wife)

Alignment, it turns out, sometimes looks like admin, responsibility, and continually showing up for the things that matter most to you (especially when fear and self-doubt are present).

During that café review session, we worked through a series of questions — some my wife curated, many from a list I put together back in 2016.

They weren’t designed to optimise performance.
They were designed to surface truth.

What stood out wasn’t the answers.
It was the relief.

Relief that came from:

• not forcing clarity before it was ready

• naming what felt heavy without immediately fixing it

• realising that reflection itself creates momentum

If 2025 felt slower, heavier, or less exciting than you expected, this is why this matters.

Because clarity doesn’t come from pushing harder into a year that already asked a lot of you. It comes from asking better questions.

LinkedIn dropped its first-ever “Year in Review” feature last week. Cute. It told me the one person I connected with most… which is nice to know, but not exactly the kind of info I can use to get better at content.

So I built a custom GPT to generate my own 2025 LinkedIn Year in Review using my actual LinkedIn exports.

Result: over the past 365 days, my content reached 240,014 people — that’s like packing out the Sydney Opera House 42 times… which is a lot of polite clapping. 👏

I also recorded a video walkthrough showing exactly how I created this review (scroll to the bottom). And as a thank-you gift for being a subscriber, I’m sharing the link to my custom GPT so you can generate your own.

💡 Perspective: What The Data Says

Here’s what I think is true about LinkedIn (and it’s mildly annoying):

The posts that do well aren’t always the ones you plan like a launch campaign. They’re usually the ones that feel specific, human, and easy to react to.

A few highlights from the year:

• Biggest reach post: “Redundant, Not Broken.” — 15,360 impressions

• Most comment-heavy moment: “Pls help me pick a cover image…” — 69 comments

• Career updates still do numbers: “I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position” — 64 comments

Also worth bookmarking: LinkedIn’s Gyanda Sachdeva (VP Product Management) wrote a very practical article, “Answers to Top LinkedIn Feed Questions of 2025,” which is basically the clearest “how the feed works” explainer I’ve seen.

🚀 Progress: Patterns That Worked

Once I separated “reach posts” from “reply posts,” the patterns got obvious.

What got reach:
The best performers opened with a tension people recognised instantly:

• home is distracting / office is loud

• Ever hit a point where even rest feels tiring?

• How much does it cost a couple to climb Maslow’s Pyramid in Sydney?

These posts are basically: “Here’s a real problem. Are you also living this?”

What got replies:
The most engaged posts gave people a job.
Not “watch me perform.” More like:

• help me decide

• tell me your version

• add your take

My cover-image post didn’t get 69 comments because it was genius.
It got 69 comments because it was participatory.

Top 3 themes that carried my year:

1. Career resilience (with receipts) — messy middle stories, but structured

2. Modern work friction — specific, relatable “I’m fine but…?” moments

3. AI curiosity — grounded experiments, not hot takes for sport

What worked (patterns, but make it spicy):

1. Vulnerability with structure beats “thought leadership with vibes.”

2. Questions outperform statements (because LinkedIn loves homework).

3. You have two lanes — brain + heart — and when you blend them, it hits.

Here’s the bonus insight: the GPT only knows what the data tells it. It can’t see what I saw.

So I added one key observation manually — because context matters:

Many of my best-performing and most-engaged posts were event recaps that included photos and tagged people.

And to get that into the recap, this is the exact follow-up prompt I used:

“add an observation, many of my best performing and most engaged posts were recaps of events I’d attended, where I included photos and tagged people. (note, why this is the case)”

Why it’s probably true:

• Photos compress context (scroll-stopper + instant vibe)

• Tags widen distribution (your post travels through networks, not just followers)

• Shared experiences spark comments (attendees add nuance; non-attendees ask questions; lurkers feel safe to chime in)

Honestly, event recap posts are also the most fun for me because I get to go out into the real world, meet cool people, and learn stuff. Writing the recap reinforces what I've learned and gives me the warm fuzzies from seeing photos of the awesome peeps I hung out with.

It’s one of the few formats where “value” and “vibes” can coexist without fighting.

They can also help other people feel like they were there.

🎁 Payoff: Why It’s Worth It

Here’s why it’s worth investing in LinkedIn in 2026 (even if you’re allergic to personal branding):

LinkedIn is one of the few places where a single well-timed, well-structured post can still create real compounding returns:

• new relationships that didn’t exist yesterday

• opportunities that show up because people understand your work

• credibility that builds quietly while you’re busy doing your job

• a searchable “body of proof” that makes you easier to trust

And the best part? You don’t need to post daily, be loud, or be cringe.
You just need to show up with clarity, specificity, and a repeatable format that your network can react to.

That’s what this year-in-review gave me: a feedback loop.
Not “more content.” Better bets.

Over the past few years, I’ve had a front-row seat to brilliant people doing excellent work… and still getting overlooked.

They’re not missing talent. They’re missing visibility, clarity, and the right kind of traction.

Not overnight. But steadily—and with more ease than I expected.

🚀 Progress: What I’ve Learned by Doing (and Watching Others Do)

Here’s what I’ve tried, observed, and collected from people who now get noticed for the right reasons:

1. Share your work in public

Mindset: Visibility is not arrogance—it’s leadership.

The more I posted online (even casually), the more people connected the dots between what I do and what I know.

Five months ago, I posted a video on my LinkedIn announcing a project that I’d been quietly brewing for some time. Sharing something I was working on sparked supportive comments like this one from :

Incidentally, this project has since been given a name - Migrant Wealth Builders.

I’ve seen founders attract investors, and creators land collaborations just by showing up and sharing the process—even the messy parts.

I particularly resonate with the sentiment shared that “build in public” has become “brag in public”, and they suggest better ways to approach it if you don’t want to come across as one of those braggers.

Consequence of ignoring this skill: You’ll be a well-kept secret—and not in a good way.

Mindset: If I can’t explain it simply, I probably don’t understand it deeply.

The people who get remembered are the ones who explain complex ideas in plain language.

I used to overtalk to sound smart—now I default to simple and specific. Simple language builds trust faster—because people feel like you’re not hiding behind jargon.

But it’s not just about what you say—it’s about what you’re willing not to say “yes” to.

Michelle J Raymond shared:

“Being a yes person I think helps people get promoted faster. I never quite got the hang of that skill.”

It’s a common belief that saying yes leads to opportunity. And sometimes it does.
But I’ve also seen people earn deep respect by setting boundaries and speaking up when something doesn’t align.

Clear communication builds real leadership, not just likability.

Consequence of ignoring this skill: People won’t follow your thinking—or trust your judgment.

3. Learn to speak in dollars, not just ideas

Mindset: If I want people to invest in what I do, I need to show them the upside.

I’ve seen talented marketers lose executive buy-in because they focused on "reach" when the room was more interested in "revenue."

Purna Virji once bombed a CFO presentation pitching “brand awareness.” The CFO asked one question:

“What’s the payback period?”

She later said:

“CFOs don’t hate spending money. They hate uncertain outcomes.”

Learning to speak their language was the best move she ever made.

4. Document your wins and your IP

Mindset: If I don’t write it down, it didn’t happen.

I’ve lost track of my own wins before. I’ve also watched people get sidelined while others took credit for their work.

Kerry Milne put it bluntly:

“I never said what I was good at. Never asked for reviews. Totally set myself back years.”

Joanna Bloor adds:

“The future is shaped in conversations you don’t hear—until someone brings your name into the room.”

Consequence of ignoring this skill: Your impact gets forgotten, downplayed, or erased.

• Anne-Laure Le Cunff shares how she almost didn’t attend her Phd graduation ceremony, but is glad that she did.

• Kate Toon shares an update on the end-of-year figures for the local book shop she took over a year ago.

• Yiying Lu shares how her emoji art was featured in a story about World Emoji Day on ABC7 News Bay Area.

5. Grow a diverse network

Mindset: The best ideas come from outside the echo chamber.

I started Founders Walks as a way to connect with other builders—and to get out of my chair.

The first one? Just two founders, one VC, and me walking and chatting as we explored Barangaroo together here in Sydney. And the feedback was terrific:

“Such a vibe. Low-stakes, smart people, great conversations.” — String Nguyen

“Perfect environment to practice networking while fundraising.” — David Wilson

And it never once felt like “networking.”

Cheryl Saw’s CandidConvos gathering does something similar - her last event brought 51 people into a room to connect around authenticity and good energy.

Consequence of ignoring this skill: You’ll keep solving small problems with small perspectives.

6. Learn to build things (even without code)

Mindset: I don’t need permission. I need prototypes.

Naval Ravikant puts it best:

“Learn to sell. Learn to build. If you can do both, you will be unstoppable.”

Here’s the thing—we’re now in a time where builders are more highly valued than ever.
Why? Because we finally have tools that lower the barrier to actually making something—fast.

AI, no-code platforms, and productised services mean you don’t have to wait for a developer, raise capital, or build an agency to test an idea. In 2025, you can “vibe code” and ship a prototype in 20 minutes with a single prompt using tools like Loveable and Replit. (I know because I’ve been testing these)

Tim Griffiths has also been playing with these vibe coding tools, and he put it this way:

”They're not just toys. They're transforming how fast you can prototype. It’s a great way to validate ideas internally without blowing your budget on development time.”

This shift rewards people who move from "I have an idea" to "Here's a working version"—without needing a full team behind them.

Whether you're inside a company or building something of your own, being able to build and test quickly makes you the person who creates momentum (not just talks about it).

Consequence of ignoring this skill: You’ll stay in theory while others are shipping.

7. Master self-leadership

Mindset: If I want others to trust me, I need to trust myself first.

Self-leadership isn’t just about setting goals. It’s about owning the direction you're heading—even if it’s still unfolding.

Joanna Bloor shared how she missed a leadership opportunity. Not because she lacked experience. But because she hadn’t shown where she wanted to go.

“When a new CEO joined, I focused on the team’s wins and forgot to share where I wanted to go next. He assumed I didn’t have a next.”

She later reflected:

“I hadn’t shared a vision—because I didn’t really have one.”

That’s the pivot point. She realised she hadn’t trusted herself enough to claim a direction—so no one else could see one either.

And that clarity? It changed everything. Within six months, she was invited to speak at TED. Because she began to reveal the future she envisioned for herself, and others could see it too.

“Make it easier for others to invite you and your ideas.”

Consequence of ignoring this skill: You’ll play small and wait for permission that never comes.

8. Think in systems, not silos

Mindset: Zoom out before diving in.

Every meaningful project I’ve worked on required understanding how teams, tools, and priorities interconnected.

People who think systemically don’t just fix symptoms—they prevent future messes. And the ability to do this is highly valued.

Consequence of ignoring this skill: You’ll be seen as a doer, but not a decider.

9. Find mentors and co-conspirators

Mindset: You don’t need to go it alone.

The most successful people I know don’t wait for “mentorship”—they build circles.
Sometimes it’s one DM. Sometimes it’s a project partner.

I’ve had more breakthroughs from quick convos than from courses or books. Those conversations have sparked collaborations, brought in work, connected me with amazing people, and opened doors I never saw coming.

Consequence of ignoring this skill: You’ll move… but in circles.

10. Treat everything as an experiment

Mindset: Every action is a test worth reviewing.

As someone who used to think I needed to have all the information before I attempted anything, I now approach everything—conversations, projects, even this TAFE journalism course I just started—as tiny experiments.

Monthly reviews show me what worked, what didn't, and what to try next (I use ’s Plus Minus Next framework in case you’re curious). Mistakes become data points, not reasons to quit.

The people who consistently grow are the ones running small tests constantly and learning from whatever doesn't go to plan.

Here’s how to start:

1. Share your work in public
    Post one lesson, experiment, or behind-the-scenes moment this week. Doesn't need to be polished—just honest. (and email me/comment when you do, I’ll happily give you a shoutout in an upcoming communication)

2. Communicate clearly
    Rewrite your LinkedIn bio like you're explaining it to a 12-year-old. Simplicity = credibility.

3. Translate your value into dollars
    Reframe one past win with a number: time saved, cost cut, revenue added.

4. Ask for recommendations
    After any project, ask a teammate or client to write you a LinkedIn review. Prompt them to highlight your impact.

5. Host or attend a gathering
    Grab coffee with someone new. Join an event. Or host one—4 friends, 10 peers, or 50 strangers.

6. Build a scrappy MVP
    Use Loveable or Replit to turn an idea into something testable.

7. Write your North Star
    Where are you going? What kind of work do you want to lead? Write it down—even messily.

8. Solve upstream
    Next time you face a problem, ask: “What caused this?” Then fix that.

9. Reach out to someone you admire
    DM someone and ask for a 15-min chat. It’s not about networking—it’s about connecting.

10. Log a weekly lesson
     At the end of this week, write down one thing you messed up—and what it taught you.

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about “flow.”

Not just in the mystical, new-agey, float-around-on-a-scooter-in-Bali kind of way (though I’ve done that too). But in a grounded, practical sense.

Yesterday morning, my wife and I were sitting outside one of our favourite local cafés. I had my usual — a hot soy mocha with honey and, for the first time, a toasted cherry croissant.

C looked at me and asked:

“What do we need to do to get you into flow?”

I smiled and said, “I think I’m already in some flow.”

Just last week, I scored a sponsored ticket to the Sunrise Startup Festival. And the way it happened felt completely aligned — not forced, just timely. Here’s how it unfolded.

Right now, I’m in a season of transition. I'm doing work I enjoy — teaching marketing and branding to international students, writing more stuff that I feel inspired to write, developing a new productised service to help startups build their content engine, and experimenting with new creative projects (like a podcast I’m about to launch).

And I’m doing yoga every other day, which definitely helps my headspace.

It’s not flashy. It’s not perfectly structured.
But it feels right.

I'm still planning and strategising — but I’m also learning to listen. To the nudges. The gut pulls. The subtle invitations that say: “try this” or “reach out to them.”

And honestly? The more I trust my internal compass, the more aligned my work and life feel.

The Origin of “Go With the Flow”

The phrase “go with the flow” has roots much deeper than the hippie slogans of the 1960s. Here's a quick dive into where it comes from:

• Taoism taught that we should move like water—soft, strong, adaptive.

• Stoics like Marcus Aurelius used river metaphors to remind us that change is constant, and we do better when we accept it rather than fight it.

• Even Shakespeare hinted at this in Julius Caesar: “There is a tide in the affairs of men, which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune…”

• And then there's psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, who coined “flow” to describe that delicious state of immersion in an activity where time disappears and you're fully present.

All point to one idea: when we stop trying to force the river, we discover new paths—some of which we never could have mapped ourselves.

The idea of going with the flow isn’t new to me.

Here I am, literally flowing down a river in Laos 14 years ago, without a care in the world.

I first embraced the concept of flow after recovering from brain surgery in 2005. That experience completely shifted how I approached life and work.

I leaned into meditation, wrote affirmations, practised yoga, and followed spiritual teachers like Eckhart Tolle and the Dalai Lama.

I watched The Secret and allowed myself to get swept up in the idea of the ”Law of Attraction”. Part of me still connects with the spirit of it — this idea that what we focus on grows, and that clarity and belief can shape outcomes.

But another part of me — the more grounded, curious side — sees why people roll their eyes. A lot of it feels like pseudo-science, magical thinking dressed up as personal development. I totally get it.

That said, some scientific studies do support the benefits of positive thinking, visualisation, and goal-setting. What spiritual teachers call "vibration," psychology might call mood, mindset, or belief loops.

I don’t think belief alone bends the universe, but I do believe the stories we tell ourselves shape how we show up, and that shapes a lot.

Back then, “go with the flow” felt expansive — like a new operating system for life.

But over the years, I’ve watched myself bounce between two modes:

• Full surrender and flow

• Hardcore strategy and structure.

I’ve seen both work. I’ve also seen both fail.

For example, in 2009, after my mum passed away from liver cancer, I felt a strong urge to return to my homeland of Laos — a country I left as a baby when my parents fled as refugees. I’d never been back.

When I shared this with my friend Shawn in Toronto, she mentioned a school in Vientiane called Sunshine School. So I emailed the director, Didi Gaorii, to volunteer. That led me to teach English, which eventually (and randomly, I might add…) brought me to a powerful TED Talk by Kiran Bir Sethi.

Her talk? “Kids, take charge.”
It hit me hard.

I showed the video to Didi and asked, “Could we try this at our school?”
She said yes.

And just like that, Design for Change Laos was born.

We started with my Year 8 class. The students launched a project to clean up the local market. The story got picked up by local media. And before we knew it:

• 9 schools in Vientiane joined us

• Over 200 students got involved

• We had a core team of volunteer teachers who met after hours and on weekends, in addition to running workshops and mentoring teachers and students at their schools.

• We even had a local documentary filmmaker create a documentary about the project.
  

This wasn’t paid work. It was fuelled by passion.
And it changed lives — including mine.

Because of DFC Laos, I was invited to:

• Attend the Design for Change Global Partner Meet in Ahmedabad, India, in 2011—at Kiran’s own Riverside School, where DFC all began.

• Represent Laos at the Make a Difference (MaD) Conference 2012 in Hong Kong (and participate in the event opening sequence, which was spectacular)

And all of that started with a gut feeling… a quiet inner voice saying, “Go home.”

You Can’t Plan Magic

Our minds love planning. They love certainty. But they’re not great at predicting what will actually make us happy.

Psychologist Daniel Gilbert nails this in Stumbling on Happiness:

“We treat our future selves as though they were our children... spending most of the hours of most of our days constructing tomorrows that we hope will make them happy... But our temporal progeny are often thankless... we toil and sweat to give them just what we think they will like... and they wonder how we could ever have been stupid enough to think they’d like that.”

It’s humbling, isn’t it?

🚀 Progress: Living, Learning and Letting Go

So, where am I now with this whole “flow” thing?

I’m learning to honour both structure and intuition. To plan, but also stay open.

A few things lately have reminded me of the magic that happens when you follow the feeling:

🧠 Meeting

Nick and I first connected online through a copywriting group.

We met in person in Melbourne last October. What struck me was how tuned in he was. Nicholas would get a gut feeling — a word, a signal, a subtle nudge — and just act on it.

That’s how he became a freelance copywriter. Someone casually mentioned ghostwriting to him. He listened to that prompt, pitched a client, and now earns a solid income doing what he loves.

I recently learned that Nick has been hanging out in Danang, Vietnam. Danang has a special place in my heart because it’s where I found my energy again after burning out during the pandemic.

Unlike me, though, Nick’s not making the same mistake that I made in the 18 months that C and I were based there.

🌉 Reuniting with Carlyn

We met back in 2011 via Twitter, part of a small online group we called The Sunshine Squad. We stayed in touch over the years, and in Feb 2024, we finally met in person — on a sunset Sydney Harbour Bridge walk with C and our good mate Daz.

As Carlyn shared on her Instagram:

“Within a day of arriving in Sydney, a @strangerstofriends story, 14 years in the making… came to life in the most epic way.”

What I admire most about Carlyn is her ability to breathe through the discomfort of things not working out as planned, ground, and reflect. She recently shared a personal reflection about the contrast between her experiences in New Zealand and Australia:

"If I’m being honest, Australia hasn’t been the same ‘flow’ as New Zealand. In New Zealand, things magically fell into place—almost effortlessly. Australia, on the other hand, has felt more… forced. Sure, things have worked out, but they’ve felt heavier, like I’ve been pushing instead of allowing… I created meaning, formed expectations, and convinced myself I needed to go.

This was completely different from my synchronistic cat sit in New Zealand. There, I had almost no expectations. I barely did any research. I didn’t even have my first road trip mapped out until the day before I started it! I booked my first Airbnb the night before arriving. And yet, it all unfolded beautifully. Sure, there were hiccups and a learning curve, but I found my rhythm."

Such awareness and honesty are rare. Carlyn’s story is another reminder that “flow” isn’t always about ease—it’s often about noticing when something feels off, and having the courage to recalibrate.

Now Carlyn’s in Danang too, and I’ve connected her with Nick. So who knows, they just might cross a bridge together as well, literally or metaphorically.

🌿 Learning from Karen Monaghan

Karen is the co-founder and CEO of Our Kinds, a sustainability startup I’ve been supporting for the past year as a fractional Chief Marketing Officer. Week after week, I watch her operate in sync with intuition — tuning into her body, the mission, and the timing of things.

She’s a master of rituals. In a recent LinkedIn post, part of her daily writing and sharing ritual, Karen wrote:

“The intersection of water and sand — the French call yod…
The arrival of ideas and resources and the letting go of what’s no longer needed — I call transition…
As my feet melt into the sand and are bathed by the sea…
We are at an intersection across the globe — it’s time to challenge the status quo and allow renewal.”

Watching her work has reminded me that flow isn’t passive. It’s listening. Then acting.

As someone with a Projector Human Design, I’ve had to learn to “wait for the invitation.” And it’s hard. I don’t love waiting. But I’ve realised that when I act from alignment, things move. When I force them, they stall. Learning this rhythm has made a real difference.

As Danielle LaPorte said:

“Going with the flow is responding to cues from the universe. It’s wakeful trust and total collaboration with what’s showing up.”

Each of these people reminded me that flowing doesn’t mean floating aimlessly — it means responding to life with presence.

“I think flow comes very naturally to me...It took me a while to discover how lost I felt within rigid structures. And now, I think I am finding my flow within softer structures, if I can put it that way.”

Going with the flow doesn’t mean being passive. It means:

• Listening to what lights you up

• Trusting those nudges, even if they don’t make sense right away

• Letting yourself move forward before you have it all figured out.

• Pay attention to what energises you, not just what makes logical sense. A hunch might be the next breadcrumb.

• Let yourself try without overplanning. Not everything needs a slide deck, spreadsheet or tight KPIs before you start. Furthermore, hard targets are problematic, so be flexible.

Today, I’m sharing why I’m pivoting, what I’ve learned, and how I’m reshaping my career for more alignment and sustainability—insights that might help you rethink your own path.

After two years as a fractional CMO, I’ve decided to pivot. While the experience has been valuable, I’ve realised that this model doesn’t align with how I want to work long-term.

Instead, I’m focusing on building a life and career that align with my values, energy, and long-term vision. That means prioritising work that makes an impact, allows me to guide rather than grind, and creates the financial and personal freedom my wife and I are working towards.

Why I’m Still Betting on Our Kinds

Even though I’m moving away from fractional CMO work, I’ve stayed on with my final CMO client, Our Kinds, on a sweat equity basis. I was initially brought in for a short-term engagement, but something about this project felt different. The vision, the journey so far, the team, unique business model, and long-term impact align deeply with what I want to build.

A crucial part of my role as fCMO is helping Our Kinds secure funding from suitable investors. I see this as a challenge and an opportunity with a significant learning curve since I haven't worked in this field before. I'm thankful to our CEO, Karen, for recognising the valuable perspective I bring to this effort.

This experience reinforced what I already knew: I don’t want to just consult from the sidelines—I want to create something meaningful.

Moving on…

This shift is about depth, not just revenue. I’m moving towards work that fits my strengths, energy, and long-term sustainability. But before discussing what’s next, let’s look at why I’m leaving most fractional CMO work behind.

💡 Perspective: Why I’m Moving Away from Fractional Work

There’s a lot to love about fractional leadership—but also a lot that makes it unsustainable. Here’s why I’ve decided to step away:

1️⃣ Short-Term Relationships End Abruptly

Fractional CMO work often feels like business “dating”—exciting at first, but soon I’m back to chasing new clients when the contract ends.

The other missing piece is if you’re working 100% remotely, it can be super hard for extended periods without in-person interaction with your team(s).

As yorCMO wrote,

“One of the biggest trade-offs in becoming a fractional CMO is that you miss out on the camaraderie and structure of a traditional office environment. While remote work has become the new norm—with high earners especially leaning into location-independent work—there’s still something to be said for the energy of an in-person team [McKinsey].”

For the past two years I’ve worked with a mix of professional services firms and tech startups. Some projects were great, but others ended abruptly, leaving me searching for the next client and feeling like I’d just been unceremoniously dumped after I thought things were seemingly going well (not a good feeling at all).

I want long-term relationships that can be developed over years, where I can grow with a company and make a lasting impact. I don’t need them to be full-time or in-office, but I’d be open to exploring a hybrid arrangement where it makes sense.

2️⃣ Limited Time, Limited Influence

Driving real marketing transformation is difficult when you only work one or two days a week.

One time when I was hired as a fractional CMO, I was not introduced as such internally. In the presence of colleagues I was collaborating with, the COO referred to me as an “external consultant,” which immediately undermined my authority and created incorrect expectations regarding my role there. I was also not invited to executive meetings or strategic discussions, which made it nearly impossible for me to operate at the level I was hired for.

Without a clear seat at the table, fractional CMOs risk becoming high-priced consultants rather than true strategic leaders. For some folks that’s OK, but not for me.

I’m not the only person who feels fractional CMOs rarely work out in these situations.

That said, I also could have advocated for my role more, established authority early on, and communicated expectations. Leadership isn’t just about having the right title—it’s about how you show up. Lesson learned.

I feel that a major issue with all of this fractional stuff boils down to confusion with what “fractional” actually means. If you ask 20 different fractional leaders, and 20 different businesses working with fractionals, you will get a whole range of responses.

I often return to this definition of fractional leadership which I think explains it well:

3️⃣ Short Engagements Make It Hard to Deliver Big Results

Marketing isn’t instant. It’s a long-term play.

Yet, many fractional CMO contracts I worked on lasted just three to six months—not nearly enough time to:
✔️ Execute big-picture strategies
✔️ Build sustainable marketing systems
✔️ Deliver meaningful results that future clients can reference

Even when one company agreed to an 18-month contract, they ended it after 8 months because:
🔹 They lacked skilled marketing talent to execute my strategies. I took on the responsibility of hiring external support, but that proved unsuccessful.
🔹 The founder struggled with letting go of control, making progress painfully slow.
🔹 Their regulated industry added additional hurdles.

Here’s where I could have improved with this one—clarifying upfront where delays might occur in the workflow for releasing marketing material and raising my concerns when I noticed red flags about progress (we planned to publish a monthly article, but after three months, we finally got the first one live).

In reality, many early-stage companies don’t need a fractional CMO—they need a full-time marketing manager who can execute. Companies may consider hiring a fractional Marketing Director (fMD) instead.

4️⃣ Compensation vs. Commitment

Working with funded fintech and AI startups paid (much) better, but short-term contracts made financial stability unpredictable.

A 12+ month engagement allows for:
✔️ Clearer expectations and structured deliverables.
✔️ More trust and influence within the company.
✔️ Better financial sustainability for both the business and consultant.

Short-term projects often lack these benefits, making it harder to create lasting impact.

5️⃣ Learning to Work With (Not Against) My Projector Human Design

This shift isn’t just about strategy—it’s also about energy.

I’m a Projector in Human Design, which means I excel at seeing the bigger picture, offering strategic insights, and guiding others. But I’m not built for constant execution and grinding through work.

For years, I thought I just needed to “push through.” Over the past decade, I realise that working smarter, not harder, is the only way forward.

Here’s how I’m applying this:
✔️ Focusing on guidance over execution—mentoring, coaching, teaching, and strategic leadership rather than hands-on execution.
✔️ Honouring my energy cycles—batching creative work when I’m in flow, resting when I need to recharge.
✔️ Saying no to work that drains me—only taking on projects where my insights are valued and actionable.

This pivot allows me to lean into my strengths rather than constantly working against them.

🚀 Progress: What’s Next?

Here’s where I’m shifting my focus in 2025:

✅ 1. Building a Community for Immigrant & Minority Professionals

You may have seen my nervous announcement on LinkedIn last week about this (if not, check it out here).

I want to empower immigrant and minority communities to build generational wealth financially, in their careers, health, and relationships.

This is something I’ve been thinking about for a while. Too many talented professionals from underrepresented backgrounds struggle to access the knowledge, mentorship, and opportunities they need to succeed.

I don’t know what this will become (if anything), but I feel strongly about it.

Next steps:
🔹 Talking to professionals & businesses already in this space.
🔹 Connecting with potential members & partners to refine the vision.
🔹 Testing different business models before launching.

✅ 2. Teaching & Mentoring

I’m finalising a contract to mentor at a global academy that offers entrepreneurship courses to students. That means I’ll be getting paid to teach in-person and online classes (3 hrs per class) for each course over a number of weeks. I’ll be teaching digital marketing courses as part of their curriculum.

✅ 5. A Personal Dream: Our Tiny Home & Off-Grid Living

Beyond work, my wife and I are slowly moving towards financial freedom by building a tiny home on wheels and shifting to an off-grid lifestyle.

These are very early days, and we’re currently working through the overwhelming amount of information available.

Last month, we visited a tiny home showcase by a local builder and learned about two councils in NSW that currently allow tiny homes on wheels.

Next step: We need to investigate further and find landowners in Australia (or NZ) who may be willing to rent land so we can put a tiny house on it. I’d also like to talk to any tiny home owners renting or renting land before moving onto their own. (Know anyone? I’d love an intro.)

Fractional leadership can be brilliant. I know several fractional CMOs who thrive on one—to—two—year engagements.

If I were starting over, here’s what I’d do differently:

✔️ Set proper minimums (12-month+ contracts with 3-month exit points for example)
✔️ Package my approach with a clear framework
✔️ Price my services taking into account market value for CMOs in the Aus startup world (the Think & Grow 2022/2023 Australian Start-Up Salary Guide is a great starting point)
✔️ Focus on 2-3 standout case studies with solid metrics
✔️ Partner with fractional CFOs, COOs, and CROs for referrals
✔️ Invest in content that attracts the right clients
✔️ Create measurable impact in the first 90 days with each engagement (here’s a great resource on how to do this)
✔️ Get connected with a supportive community of fractionals ASAP, locally and online (I highly recommend the Fractionals United Slack group).

The truth? Fractional work can succeed—but only with proper structure, clear expectations, and solid systems. Mine simply didn’t.

My cousin asked, raising an eyebrow as she scrolled through my list during our monthly review session.

“Of course,” I replied, confused. “How else will I know if I’ve achieved the goal or not?”

She leaned back, her psychology degree practically glowing in the room. “Sure, but have you ever thought about what happens if you don’t hit them? Or worse, what you might compromise to make them happen?”

That conversation sent me down a rabbit hole of research. As a fractional head of marketing for startups, I see all too often how obsessed founders and their teams can be with hard metrics. Having worked in marketing for 15+ years, I’ve fallen into this obsession myself.

But I’ve learned this: hard targets—the kind we’re told are essential for success—might be doing more harm than good.

Why Hard Targets Can Backfire

Hard targets like “Increase revenue by 25% this quarter” or “Lose 10kg in three months” are designed to push us to perform at our peak. However, research shows they often come with unintended consequences:

• They Encourage Unethical Behavior:
  Aggressive goals can push people to cut corners or fudge numbers. A study in Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes found that pressure to meet challenging targets leads to unethical behaviour like lying, cheating or stealing, which individuals wouldn't otherwise do.

• They Can Crush Self-Esteem:
  A 2021 study revealed that missing ambitious goals leads to negative emotions, reduced self-esteem, and lower motivation. Over time, this can spiral into disengagement or burnout.

• They Distort Risk Judgments:
  Setting hard targets can mess with your decision-making. Harvard research has demonstrated how people take unnecessary risks to meet goals, often with disastrous results.

• They Narrow Your Focus:
  Rigid goals make you concentrate on one outcome, often at the expense of other important priorities. Researchers cite the 1996 Mt. Everest disaster as a tragic example, where the summit goal overshadowed safety concerns. That eventually led to the deaths of six climbers.

• They Stifle Learning:
  When goals are overly specific, they limit adaptability and openness to new approaches—two qualities essential for growth.

Reframing Goal Setting: A Balanced Approach

Instead of scrapping goal-setting altogether, what if we approached it differently? Let’s explore three key strategies to make goal-setting more effective and sustainable.

1. Focus on Process Over Outcomes

Rather than fixating on results, shift your focus to the habits and actions that lead to success.

For example:

• Hard Target: “Lose 10kg in three months.”

• Process Goal: “Exercise 3 times a week and eat balanced meals.”

Why Salesflare organise their team around habits, not goals

In an episode of the Authentic Marketer podcast, I spoke with Jeroen Corthout, co-founder and CEO of Salesflare. During our conversation, he shared a fascinating insight about how his team changed the way they approached KPIs and goals.

His philosophy? It’s not about chasing numbers; it’s about building habits that naturally lead to those numbers.

In many organisations, goal-setting often looks like this: set a big, ambitious target (e.g., increase sales by 50%) and work backwards to figure out how to get there. While this approach may seem logical, Jeroen shared that it’s rarely effective.

“Sometimes, we think if we put this really big goal at the end of the year, it’s going to happen. Well, that’s not how it works,” he said.

Here’s the issue: when the focus is solely on end results, teams can lose direction. Big goals without clear, actionable steps can feel overwhelming or vague. Worse still, they can leave teams demotivated, especially if progress isn’t immediately visible.

Instead, Jeroen advocates for an approach centred on habits—the consistent actions and behaviours that drive long-term success.

“When you have habits—whether daily, weekly, or monthly—it creates that momentum. If you set the habits at the right level and do a really good job, you’ll probably end up doing far better than you thought you would.”

2. Build in Flexibility

Life happens. A rigid goal doesn’t account for unexpected challenges. Reframe your goals to allow for adjustments along the way. For example:

• Rigid Goal: “Launch my product by July 1st.”

• Flexible Goal: “Complete the top 3 tasks needed for launch in July.”

3. Prioritise Well-Being

Your goals should stretch you, not break you. Consider how your goals impact your mental health. Are they motivating or draining? If it’s the latter, pivot.

Alternative Frameworks to Consider

The SMART framework—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound—is a popular approach to goal setting. But I’ve found it often misses one key element: how I want to feel about the goal while working toward it and once achieving it.

If SMART goals don’t work for you, consider alternatives:

• Desire Map: Danielle LaPorte’s method focuses on identifying core desired feelings rather than specific outcomes. Create a life that feels good on the inside, not just one that looks good on the outside.

• CLEAR: Collaborative, Limited, Emotional, Appreciable, Refinable. A great option for group goals, ensuring they’re adaptive and meaningful.

• PACT: Purposeful, Actionable, Continuous, Trackable. Focus on continuous growth rather than fixed achievement.

For instance, let’s say your goal is to grow your newsletter:

• SMART Goal: “Get 2,000 subscribers in 12 weeks.”

• PACT Goal: “Publish 10 newsletters over the next 10 weeks.”

The PACT approach focuses on the process—letting you enjoy the journey rather than obsess over the destination.

Focus on Systems, Not Goals

You’re scrolling through your favourite Slack community, and there they are again—the person who always answers questions in the help channel, but somehow, every reply ends with, “By the way, I have a program that can help.”

At first, it seems helpful. But over time, it starts to feel forced, like they’re more interested in selling than solving. You wonder if anyone else notices.

You check the community guidelines. Is this even allowed?

When you DM the community owner, they explain, “Since they’re responding to legitimate questions, it’s fine. If it was unrelated or unprompted, then it would be a problem. And they don’t seem pushy or over the top.”

Fair enough—it’s their call. But you can’t help feeling like this behaviour has ick all over it.

The Problem

Ever been at a networking event where someone skips getting to know you and shoves a business card in your face? It feels disrespectful—like they’re only there to take, not give, right?

The same energy comes through online, like when you accept a LinkedIn connection request from a stranger and immediately get a sales pitch in your DMs. It’s clear they’re more focused on making a quick sale than building a genuine connection, and it leaves a bad taste, doesn’t it?

When you focus on pushing your product or service instead of connecting with people, you:

• Get ignored because your intentions feel obvious and transactional.

• Risk being banned if you break community guidelines. (Especially on Reddit, which has a firm no-promo policy)

• Miss opportunities to build genuine relationships that could lead to long-term success.

Think Beyond Selling

Here’s the shift: Stop thinking about selling and start thinking about serving.

When I first started networking to grow my business in 2011, I quickly realised something: Don’t network for clients. Network for partners.

Go in with the mindset of finding people who align with your values, serve a similar audience, and might be fun to collaborate with. Instead of, “Do you want to buy my thing?” ask, “Who are you? What challenges are you trying to solve? How can we help each other win?”

Adopting this mindset allowed me to land 2x TEDx speaking gigs, land clients, and more.

This same approach works online. People take notice when you focus on being helpful and sharing your expertise. They remember you—and when they’re ready to buy, they’ll come to you.

How to Build Trust (and Eventually Sales)

If you want to promote without promoting, here’s how to get started:

1. Know the Rules
   Every community or platform has guidelines. Familiarise yourself with them to avoid crossing the line.

2. Lead with Value
   Whether it’s Reddit, LinkedIn, or a Slack group, show up to add value. Respond thoughtfully to questions, share relevant insights, and offer help without expecting anything in return.

3. Optimise Your Profile
   On platforms like Reddit or LinkedIn, your profile is prime real estate. Include links to your business or free resources, but let your contributions lead people to check you out naturally.

4. Be a Contributor, Not a Promoter
   Instead of pitching, think about how you can contribute. Share advice, success stories, or lessons learned. For example, founders who do AMAs (Ask Me Anything) often succeed because they focus on sharing their journey rather than pushing their product.

5. Play the Long Game
   Building trust takes time. Engage consistently, but don’t make every interaction about selling. The relationships you build today can lead to referrals, collaborations, or clients down the road.

How Small Accounts Generate Big LinkedIn Sales

“Why am I even bothering with LinkedIn?”

You know the feeling - posting into the void, getting engagement (oh wow, people are actually commenting on my posts! or are they bots? hmm…), watching your connection count grow while your client list... doesn't. Been there, done that, got the mug.

In November 2021, my original LinkedIn profile was unfairly suspended. After taking a long (almost 2-year) break, I returned with a new profile, which had 897 followers by October 2023.

That’s when I decided to get serious about my LinkedIn strategy—and the results have been eye-opening.

From 897 followers to $36K+: My LinkedIn Rebuild Story (And How You Can Do It Too)

Here’s what’s happened in 12 months. No viral story of 100K followers in 30 days. Sorry, not sorry.

My LinkedIn Growth:

• As at 28 Oct 2023: 897 followers

• 3 Months Later: 1,500 followers

• 6 Months Later: 2,162 followers (141% increase)

• 12 Months Later (26 Oct 2024): 3,137 followers (250% growth)

But followers, likes, and comments don’t pay the bills…

That is, until they do.

In those 12 months, my activity translated into $36K+ in revenue from LinkedIn leads and referrals, including two fractional CMO gigs. Not too shabby for a year of effort, right?

Mindset: Show up where your target buyers are and show up as someone interesting and valuable.

This approach has driven consistent growth and generated real revenue for my business.

🎯 My Process (Oct 2023 - Oct 2024):

• Daily:

  • Post following a consistent daily theme

  • Engage with other accounts. Make 5-10 meaningful comments before posting my own content

• Weekly:

  • Find and connect: Send 25-50 strategic connection requests with individuals who fit my ICP.

  • Publish Community shoutouts every Sunday (supporting others works!)

  • Publish weekly Trust Signals newsletter to demonstrate thought leadership.

• Monthly:

  • Attend a networking or learning event and post a recap (lesson or insight + photos + shoutout to person/s involved). My best performing posts of this type were:

    • a recap of a virtual summit I attended.

    • an uncomfortable story of how I went networking and knew nobody (and it turned out to be an amazing night). By the way, this post resulted in someone reaching out to me and a month later they became a Fractional CMO client)

    • sharing a personal win returning to basketball and winning a tournament with a bunch of strangers. Photos included.

• Why these types of posts work well - Posts that highlight relatable challenges or memorable takeaways, along with photos and shoutouts, tend to perform well and foster genuine connections. Networking not only boosts visibility but can lead to real business and job opportunities.

Always be testing and learning

I recently attended LinkedIn expert Adam Houlahan’s LinkedIn Blueprint event in Sydney, which validated and sharpened my approach with fresh insights on LinkedIn’s algorithm and best practices. More on this below.

2. Quality Over Quantity: Adam recommends 2-3 quality posts per week, but I’ve found daily posting works well for my audience. The key? Consistency and engaging with other connections’ content before you post.

3. Strategic Commenting Works Wonders: Commenting with intention isn’t just about visibility—it builds real connections. As Adam said, “A well-placed, insightful comment can open doors for connections or deeper conversations.” The key? Identify 5-10 individuals

Ready to Level Up? Here’s the Game Plan

Here’s a comprehensive approach, blending my strategies with Adam’s expert insights:

1. Profile Optimisation: The Essentials

• Profile Photo: Use a professional image with a clean background. A genuine smile and a distinct colour will grab people’s attention quicker.

• Banner: Keep it simple, with minimal text—remember, your profile photo overlaps it.

• Headline: Focus on the results clients can expect from hiring you.

• Role Titles: If you’re attracting a lot of spammers, you might want to avoid using “CEO” or “Founder”

• CTA: Direct viewers to an external link (website, booking page, etc.).

2. Strategic Networking (My Tried-and-Tested Method)

• Send 25-50 quality connections weekly to expand your network.

• Build real connections by commenting on other people’s posts before sharing your own content.

• Engage in regular community shoutouts to support others and tag them (I do mine every Sunday. Here’s an example).

Another way to do this is with a roundup-style post. Like Amanda Natividad’s post about top women founders with epic personal brands, and Kate Merryweather's post on the top Aussie creators on LinkedIn.

Last night, I started seeing posts on Facebook about the sudden passing of Kerwin Rae. It hit me hard.

If you’ve never heard of him, Kerwin Rae was one of Australia's most well-known business strategists and motivational speakers. Over the years, he helped countless entrepreneurs grow their businesses, but more importantly, he empowered people to take control of their lives.

Kerwin was a man who overcame countless challenges—drug addiction, ADHD, dyslexia, and multiple near-death experiences—including a stroke. Despite these setbacks, he built a successful empire, sharing his wisdom and experiences to help others live their best lives. His seminars, workshops, and online presence inspired millions across the world.

This morning, as I tried to make sense of his passing, I found myself watching a video he recently posted on his YouTube channel. It felt eerie, yet deeply poignant, given what had just happened.

"I'm actually really excited for tomorrow, especially if I wake up. Yeah, I honestly think death has so much to teach us about life. You know, I often think that the reason I was given seven near-death experiences is because I'm a little bit stubborn, and I needed to be shook a few times before I really woke up. Ever since my stroke, I've just never lived the same way again. I just don't take anything for granted. I know any day could be my last. I know every moment with my son could be the last moment, and it just drives me to give my everything whenever I'm given a moment.

If I've got an opportunity to do something and express something that I love, I just give it everything that I have while I'm there. And I want that to be the example for you—to just show up in the same way. I'm no different than you. We're all five bucks in a jar. You know, what's your excuse? There are so many people out there right now that are just kicking your ass, and they're in such worse condition than you are—mentally, physically, spiritually, emotionally—yet they're still kicking your ass. But they're using their stuff as reasons to do, not reasons to be held back and excuses as to why they can't.

Tomorrow is a new day, and every day gives us a second chance by giving us tomorrow. And not everybody gets a second chance. Not everybody gets a tomorrow. And let's not wait for you to almost lose your life, and let's not wait for someone close to you to perhaps lose their life to give you the inspiration that's required. It's up to you from here. The question is, what are you going to do about this?"

That video took on a whole new meaning today. The relevance and emotion of his words in light of what has happened are striking. While Kerwin might not have known who I was, I certainly knew him. I attended my first Kerwin Rae seminar around 2011, and I’ve been following him online ever since.

Every now and then, one of his videos would pop up on my feed—timely and inspiring. Even when it wasn’t directly applicable to my situation, like his parenting videos (I’m not a parent), they still made me think differently. Kerwin had that rare ability to be relevant and authentic, no matter the audience.

Dan Norris, a fellow entrepreneur, wrote a touching tribute to Kerwin on his blog today. He shared something that really resonated with me:

"Reading back through our messages, I realised how often I was being selfish and he was being selfless. He was always willing to help me, and I was kind of never really there to reciprocate.

That’s not really something you think about when someone is still here. But I’m thinking about it now.

RIP Kerwin, you were great."

That selflessness Dan mentioned? That’s what I admired most about Kerwin. He was always there for others, giving without expecting anything in return. He was undeniably himself—raw, real, and willing to share his journey so others could learn and grow.

As I reflect on his life and his passing, I find myself asking: How will I be remembered? I want to leave behind the same legacy—someone who was authentic, who inspired, and who was always willing to help.

What are you going to do about it?

Kerwin's final challenge to us rings loud and clear. For me, I want to be that person who lifts others up, who leaves a positive impact without expecting anything in return.

Rest in peace, Kerwin. You were indeed a light in this world.

What a Little Girl at the Spa Taught Me About Leadership

The other day, my wife and I were enjoying a peaceful, relaxing morning at the spa when a little girl, maybe 3 or 4 years old, and her dad strolled in, filling the space with fresh energy.

The bubbles stopped, and her dad softly asked her to press the button to restart them.

She stretched as far as her little body could go, standing on her tiptoes, eyes determined.

After a few adorable tries, she finally hit the button, and the bubbles joyfully returned.

We all cheered with genuine excitement, which she clearly loved. Of course, she thought it was a game, so she pressed it again to turn them off, then on, then off again, giggling with pure delight each time.

Her laughter was infectious, and we couldn’t help but smile.

In a calm and playful tone, her dad encouraged her to press it one last time, then leave it be.

She did, and when he praised her with a kind "Well done," her face lit up with pure pride.

It got me thinking—there are a few key lessons here for leaders:

1. Persistence Pays Off

Like the little girl who kept trying to press the button despite the challenge, founders and leaders must persist through difficulties.

Success often requires pushing through, even when obstacles seem just out of reach.

2. Don’t Forget to Have Fun

Last week I had the honour and pleasure of attending a full-day Our Kinds team strategy and alignment workshop in Footscray, Victoria.

How I Landed 2 TEDx Speaking Opportunities in Sydney: My Journey and Practical Tips for Aspiring Speakers

In 2013 and 2014, I had the incredible opportunity to speak at two TEDx events. But these didn’t just happen by chance—getting on the TEDx stage took consistent effort, networking, and seizing opportunities. Here’s my story.

My Journey to TEDxSydney Satellite Event at UNE FutureCampus (2013)

In 2012, my former business partner Poy TB and I set out to speak in front of audiences at least once a week. We had a process to identify speaking gigs using Facebook groups, Meetup.com, and a list of coworking spaces where our target audience would likely be.

Our strategy was simple: pitch ourselves to event organisers by highlighting the value we could bring to their audience. That year, we must have spoken at least fifty or more times to different audiences.

In 2013, while volunteering as a social media consultant for the Parramatta Chamber of Commerce, I met Rob Field, the Program Manager for the University of New England (UNE)’s new FutureCampus in Parramatta. Rob invited me to take a tour of UNE’s exciting new building.

After a few conversations, I pitched him the idea of joining forces to host a TEDxSydney Satellite Event with guest speakers at FutureCampus, including Poy and me. Rob loved the idea, and that’s how we ended up speaking at TEDxSydney’s Satellite Event at UNE FutureCampus.

How I ended up speaking at TEDxTelstraSydney (2014)

The following year, Jeffery Wang, founder of the Sydney Professional Development Forum (PDF), invited me to speak at his event. Jeff was working for Telstra at the time. 

A few weeks after my PDF talk, Jeff mentioned that Telstra was organising an employee TEDx event. Because he’d seen my presentation topic and skills, he wanted to nominate me as a speaker. He offered to connect me with the event organiser, Tom, and after a coffee meeting, I was officially invited to speak at TEDxTelstraSydney in March 2014.

After my talk, 'How we can reprogram our thinking to have a better life,' former Telstra CEO David Thodey said he enjoyed it. Coming from an esteemed leader with many presentations under his belt, that was a highlight of the event, for sure.

Jeffery, who had helped me secure the gig, gave me this affirming feedback, too:

A note from my experience: Always confirm with organisers if the talks will be shared publicly, especially if getting the video afterwards is one of your goals. 

Unfortunately, TEDxTelstraSydney was an internal event for employees only, and although the organisers recorded my talk, it was never shared publicly on TEDx platforms. I knew this beforehand and agreed to speak anyway, as I was doing it for the experience. The team shared some photos with me post-event, so that was cool.

I’ve gathered some fantastic advice from TEDx speakers and organisers, and there’s plenty we can all learn from their experiences.

A couple of tips:

1/ Just go for it and pitch away. The worst they can say is no! Think of it like pitching a story to an editor - find a strong hook/angle, write a winning paragraph and research the hell out of it to make sure you are bringing something fresh to the conversation.

2/ TEDx talks need a personal angle too, so don’t be afraid to be vulnerable and make that connection between your topic and your personal experience. That will make your pitch and your talk more memorable.

Lynne’s talk: How freelancing can empower the older woman?

T Guthrie (speaker)

For my TEDx talk, someone had let me know that there was an expression of interest open for a topic area I'd be a good fit for, and then I got in touch with the organisers. They'd already closed applications but ended up working something out because it was a good fit content-wise.

So I reckon my main tip would be to be clear in a public-facing way about the topic areas you can speak about so that people tap you on the shoulder :)

Gary Ware (speaker)

My tip is all about networking. Ask mentors or friends who’ve spoken at TEDx events for introductions to organisers. A personal referral from a previous TEDx speaker can significantly boost your credibility.

Gary’s talk: How Play Saved My Life 

Saarika Chotai (speaker)

My #1 tip: Don’t assume there are better, more experienced people out there who are more worthy of the opportunity. Or assume there’s no way you’d get picked. Just put your hat in the ring. TEDx has levels, from written applications to pitching, and you can work your way up to the bigger gigs.

Understanding what the local community will resonate with is how I've landed the two opportunities I've pitched to. We see TEDx talks on YouTube and think global, but the most important audience is the live one. The people in that room—what would they care about? The most critical thing for landing a TEDx talk is having an idea that either hasn't been heard before or an idea that is a new take on an existing concept. You want your idea to change audience perceptions—is your idea something that will make audiences feel differently about a particular thing? If so, this is a winning concept and may be appropriate for the TEDx stage.

Build authentic connections with TEDx speakers and TEDx organisers online and at events. They can offer valuable referrals or insights into upcoming opportunities. Join their mailing lists and be open to online TEDx talk opportunities, which you can secure sooner than in-person events.

How to Identify an Idea Worth Spreading

The core of every TEDx talk is an "idea worth spreading." It’s not just about sharing tips or tactics, you know. You need to present something new, surprising, and challenging.

Here are some tips to help you come up with a winning idea:

• Don’t regurgitate the same concepts: A TEDx talk isn’t a typical presentation or a "5 tips to X" talk. Your idea should present something fresh or a new angle on a concept your audience may already know. Challenge the audience’s beliefs and take them on a journey of discovery.

• Look for the unexplored: What have you always thought but never seen others express? Is there a standard practice you used to follow in your industry but now question? These unique perspectives are the seeds of a TEDx-worthy idea.

• Take the audience on a journey: Your talk should take them from where they are now to where you want them to go. If your idea challenges their beliefs, explain how you arrived at your conclusion and why it matters.

• Get personal: The best TEDx talks have a personal angle (watch Jia Jiang’s talk to see what I mean) because the audience can relate to them. Don’t be afraid to connect your topic to your own experiences. Vulnerability and authenticity help forge stronger connections with your audience.

• Nail the talk for your local audience: Focus on what will resonate most with the live audience at the local event you’ll be speaking at. Your message may resonate with a global audience, but your first priority is connecting with those in that room.

• Make it debatable and defensible: Your idea doesn’t have to be universally agreed upon—TEDx thrives on different perspectives. But make sure you can back up your ideas with research, data, or real-life examples.

Practical Tips for Landing a TEDx Talk

My journey to the TEDx stage came down to consistent effort, networking, and seizing opportunities. Here are a few tips based on my experience and the tips from the other speakers:

1. Build credibility through regular speaking

I got my TEDx opportunities because I was already speaking at events and collecting recommendations. Practice often, and gather feedback from event organisers to boost your credibility. The more you speak, the more confident you’ll become, and the more likely you’ll attract bigger opportunities.

2. Leverage relationships and referrals

Many speakers landed their TEDx talks through networking and referrals. Connect with TEDx organisers, previous speakers, or mentors who can introduce you to the right people. Volunteering, as I did at UNE FutureCampus, is also a great way to get on the organisers' radar and show your value.

3. Create a speaker kit (with video if possible)

A strong speaker kit is essential. Having a portfolio of your public speaking helps organisers see your style in action and increases your chances.

Here’s what my speaker kit contained:

Include video recordings of your talks to strengthen your pitch, and invest in a professional speaker reel to stand out even more.

4. Take action and pitch (even if you don’t feel ready)

Don’t wait until you feel "ready" or assume others are more qualified. Pitch your idea and give it a go. The worst they can say is no, right?

Every pitch refines your message for future opportunities.

5. Present a fresh, compelling idea

Saving the most important tip for last - and it can’t be stated enough which is why I’m repeating it - TEDx talks are all about "ideas worth spreading." Your pitch must offer a unique perspective or a new perspective on an existing concept. Challenge the audience's thinking rather than sharing something generic. This is the key to landing your TEDx talk.

Final Thoughts

Landing a TEDx talk isn’t easy, but it’s definitely achievable with persistence and the right strategies.

From building credibility by speaking regularly to developing a fresh and compelling idea, I hope my journey and the tips shared by other TEDx speakers give you a roadmap for success.

For me, the key takeaway has always been the power of networking and referrals. Both of my TEDx opportunities came from relationships I’d built over time, combined with my commitment to speaking regularly.

5 Pitching Lessons I Learned from a New York Stand-Up Comedian

Yesterday, I attended a fascinating Creative Mornings talk titled "5 Lessons Being a New York Standup Comedian Taught Me About Winning Pitches" by Katherine "Billy" Williams. Her experience as a New York stand-up comedian provided fresh insights on how to approach pitching with authenticity, confidence, and a great delivery.

When she's not pursuing her dreams as a stand-up comic at night, Katherine works as a digital marketer during the day.

Here are the key lessons Katherine shared, backed with stories from her time on stage and in the boardroom.

1. Be Authentic: Know Your Personal Brand and Have Your Elevator Pitch Ready

Authenticity, as Katherine explained, comes from acknowledging your truths and vulnerabilities. In comedy, she said, being authentic means asking yourself the three big questions:

• What annoys you?

• What is your biggest fear?

• What is your fatal flaw?

"From a comedian's point of view, being authentic is asking the three big questions and admitting your painful truths on stage," Billy shared during the talk.

Katherine’s Australian experience helped her connect with audiences in New York, even when the audience was rowdy and drunk. She emphasised that being authentic in pitching is just as critical as it is in comedy. When you're genuine, you build trust with your audience.

Katherine also stressed the importance of having your elevator pitch ready:

"You have to say, ‘This is what I do, this is who I am, and this is what I bring to the table,’ in less than 30 seconds."

2. Know Your Pitch Voice: Be a Pitcher's Pitcher

Katherine’s second lesson highlighted the importance of finding your pitch voice. Just like comedians aspire to be a "comedian's comedian"—someone beloved by fellow comedians—you should aim to be a "pitcher's pitcher."

Katherine explained, "I want my CEO to say, 'I want Billy on the pitch team. I know her voice, and I know she's authentic.'"

This is where storytelling comes in. A good pitch involves connecting with your audience through personal stories. Katherine described how she connected with a room full of drunk tourists in NYC through her authentic Australian stories and observations.

She referenced the James Joyce quote, “In the particular is contained the universal,” and shared how leaning into her personal experiences created a stronger connection with the audience:

"If you lean into the detail and into your personal experience, you'll have a stronger connection with them."

Her takeaway? “Capture the mind and shoot for the heart.”

3. The Difference Between Good and Brilliant is the Delivery

Delivery is everything, whether you're on stage or pitching to a client.

Katherine explained,

"Comedy is about rhythm. If you go too fast, you lose them. If you go too slow, you lose them. It's all about finding the right pace."

She talked about how she once had to adjust her delivery mid-set during a New York gig. The audience wasn’t responding, so she slowed down and made her setup clearer, which turned the set around.

The same concept applies to pitching. Reading the room and adjusting your tone, pace, and energy is key to keeping the audience engaged.

Katherine also introduced the Rule of Three, a technique in comedy where you build a premise, reinforce it, and then hit the punchline on the third point.

Here’s a comedic example:

When you die there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. When my father dies, he’ll see the light, make his way toward it, and then flip it off to save electricity. —Harland Williams

In pitching, this could look like setting up your message with two key points the audience expects, then delivering an unexpected third point that grabs attention.

As Katherine explained,

"The Rule of Three is a great way to convey information to an audience in a very clear, concise, precise way."

Here’s how the Rule of Three could be used in a pitch to sell a service:

Premise:
"When it comes to generating leads on LinkedIn, there are three key strategies that we focus on."

Reinforcement:
"First, we optimise your profile to resonate with your ideal buyers. Second, we create high-value content that addresses their specific pain points. And third, we use LinkedIn’s Sales Navigator to connect directly with decision-makers... without sending a single cold email."

Punchline:
"Instead of relying on cold email outreach, imagine getting leads coming directly to you through strategic engagement—because no one likes a spammy inbox."

4. Craft Your Act: Know When to Stop Talking

Katherine broke down the structure of a joke—premise, setup, and punchline—and how it applies to pitching. She shared how knowing when to stop talking is just as important as the punchline itself.

"We say the funny thing, and then we stop talking," she explained.

In a pitch, this translates to knowing when your audience has understood the core message and leaving it at that.

Katherine also shared the importance of editing, both in comedy and pitching:

"If I get to the third or fourth line and nothing adds value to my core concept, get rid of it."

Her advice? Edit ruthlessly. Every word should add value to the message, and you should know when to stop talking once your point has been made.

5. Post-Show Drink is a Must: Network and Build Relationships

Katherine wrapped up with an unexpected but crucial lesson—the post-show drink. In comedy, after a show, comedians gather at the bar to network and build relationships, and Billy stressed how important this part of the process is.

"After a gig, it’s not just about the laughs. You hit the bar, talk to your peers, and network. It’s where relationships form," she shared.

In business, this doesn’t necessarily mean grabbing a drink at the bar. If you don’t drink, find other ways to connect—grabbing coffee, going for a walk, or even staying back after the meeting to chat. The key is to make time to build relationships after the pitch. I’d add here that it helps to build rapport before the pitch.

Practical Tip: The "post-show drink" is a metaphor for staying engaged with your team or client before and after the formal presentation. You don’t need alcohol to network—what matters most is nurturing those connections.

My Personal Takeaway

Katherine talk reminded me that pitching, much like comedy, is about authenticity, storytelling, and connecting with your audience.

It was a timely reminder that whether you're in the boardroom or on stage, the skills you develop in one arena can always be transferred to the other.

Oh and I feel it might be time to get back out in front of audiences again.

How to Overcome Writing Challenges: 10 Tips from a 13-Time Author and Mentor

Writing and publishing your first book can seem like an enormous task—one I’ve personally experienced multiple times. 

As you may know, I started re-writing DARE TO ESCAPE: Break Free from the Rat Race and Create Your Ideal Life this year, but life got in the way. Work became challenging, and then my father-in-law fell ill with cancer and passed away. My wife and I took a much-needed healing trip to Mexico, and I lost my motivation to write somewhere along the line.

Last week, I attended a 3-hour "First-Time Author" masterclass hosted by Natasa Denman and her husband, Stuart, in Sydney. As part of my new goal to attend at least one in-person event each week, this was an excellent opportunity to reconnect with a long-time friend and business mentor I admire and haven’t seen in years.

Natasa has written 14 books herself and, through her Ultimate 48-Hour Author program, helped over 850 first-time authors publish their books.

This masterclass was packed with actionable lessons that could help any first-time author navigate the often intimidating path to publishing their book.

Below are my key takeaways.

1. Overcoming Self-Doubt and Fear

One of the biggest challenges is self-doubt. Natasa explained that many writers hold themselves back by questioning their worth and qualifications, thinking, Who am I to say I’m an expert? But your story and experiences offer something unique that others can learn from.

"Who am I to say I'm the expert? Who am I? Why am I special?"

Recognising that your story matters is the first step to pushing through the fear of inadequacy.

2. Start Without Perfection

A common mistake first-time authors make is waiting for perfection before starting. Natasa emphasised that perfection is the enemy of progress, and many first-time authors overthink the process before even putting words down.

She shared how she made mistakes when writing her first book but learned as she went.
You can’t edit a blank page, so start writing without worrying if it’s perfect.

3. Your Story Matters (But It’s Not About You)

Many first-time authors worry that no one will care about their personal stories. Natasa pointed out that readers care more about the lessons within your story, not the story itself.

"No one cares about our stories. Everyone cares about what’s in our stories."

Framing your personal experiences in a way that provides value to readers can create a powerful connection.

4. Cost as an Obstacle: Prioritise What You Value

A major hurdle for aspiring authors is the cost of publishing a book. Natasa encouraged writers to view publishing as an investment, not an expense. By making writing your book a top priority, you can figure out how to make it happen.

“If you push writing your book into your top three values for a temporary period of time, you will figure it out because then it becomes non-negotiable."

Publishing brings long-term value—financially, personally, and career growth.

5. Avoid Costly Mistakes: Choose the Right Approach

Natasa shared her personal experience of choosing the wrong publishing company for her first book, which led to wasted time and money. She advises thoroughly researching your options and asking the right questions before making decisions.

“I mucked around, I wasted time, I spent money. I had to republish because I didn't choose the right publishing company."

Choosing the right support system can save you time, money, and stress in the long run.

6. Don’t Let Fear of Regret Hold You Back

Natasa’s most powerful point was about regretting missed opportunities. She urged authors not to wait for the perfect time to start writing, as waiting often leads to regret.

“If I do nothing about it, nothing happens… Someone else will write.”

Writing your book opens doors to speaking engagements and career growth, so don’t let fear hold you back.

7. Writing as an Act of Service

Natasa’s final lesson was to view writing as an act of service. By keeping your knowledge to yourself, you miss the chance to help others avoid the same struggles.

“Who are you to decide not to share the information, the shortcuts, the wisdom you have accumulated so others can have less of a struggle?”

Writing a book isn’t just about personal gain—it’s about making a difference in the lives of others.

8. Why Wait? Write First, Get Famous Later

Natasa also addressed the myth that you need years of work experience or awards before you’re qualified to write a book. Her advice? Write the book first, then get famous!

"Why do we have to get all these years of work and awards to be ready to write the book? Write the book and then get famous. That's how I did it."

9. Clarity Comes from Action

Many authors think they need perfect clarity before they begin writing. Natasa shared that clarity comes from action—the more you write, the clearer your ideas and direction will become. 

This lesson doesn’t just apply to writing. It’s true for business and life, too. Often, we wait for the "perfect plan" or ideal circumstances before starting something new. But just like with writing, taking action is what drives progress. 

Clarity will come through the doing, whether launching a new product, starting a business, or making life changes. 

The key is to start, adapt, and grow along the way.

10. Face Resistance and Push Through

As your book nears completion, fear and resistance are natural. Natasa calls this “tinkering,” where authors keep delaying finishing out of fear of releasing their work. Recognise this, and push through.

“We call that tinkering because of fear. They don’t want to release it into the world. So always they find something that’s wrong.”

My Personal Takeaway

This month, I’ve rekindled my writing motivation and am planting the seeds for a new book. 

It started with launching my weekly LinkedIn newsletter, Trust Signals, which explores the elements of the Trust Economy and how companies can quickly build trust with potential customers and partners online. This project was born from 15 years of experience working with SaaS, B2B, and innovative businesses like Bean Ninjas, Hub Australia, Our Kinds, and Birchal. 

I’ve chosen this approach for two reasons:

1. The target market for this book is already connected with me on LinkedIn, and I’m actively searching for and connecting with new people who fit the target reader's profile weekly. The fact that I have 260+ subscribers in 3 weeks since launch is a good sign.

2. I was publishing a weekly newsletter on LinkedIn anyway, so why not write what will become chapters of my book and get live feedback along the way? 

For instance, my first newsletter, Navigating the Trust Economy: Why Credibility is Your Biggest Asset, got some pretty insightful comments: 

Natasa’s teachings were a timely reminder that progress beats perfection, and writing is a service that benefits others. Whether you're writing for business, personal growth, or creative expression, remember that your story can make an impact. And making an impact is what I’m all about. 

By the way, I haven’t completely given up on finishing Dare To Escape. I just feel like it would work better as my second book after Trust Signals.

A Grand Finale in Mexico City

After the serenity of Oaxaca and the beaches of Puerto Escondido, our final stop was Mexico City. With just two full days to explore, I planned an itinerary that would balance both the vibrant culture of Roma Norte and the awe-inspiring history of Teotihuacan.

Day 1 was all about exploring Roma Norte’s eclectic food scene, while Day 2 took us back in time to the majestic pyramids of Teotihuacan. Though our time was short, every moment felt rich with discovery and connection.

Day 1: Walking Food Tour of Roma Norte (and a bit of Colonia Condesa)

We arrived in Mexico City after an exhausting overnight bus ride from Puerto Escondido—a 9-hour trip that left me with the worst seat imaginable. The seat didn’t lock in place and kept falling backward onto the person behind me, so it was rough. After arriving at the bus terminal, we took a Didi to drop off our luggage at Hotel Monarca around 8 am, as check-in wasn’t until 3 pm and began exploring the city right away.

Roma Norte is a neighbourhood known for its stunning European-inspired architecture and creative, urban vibe. Developed in the early 20th century with Art Nouveau and Art Deco influences, it stands out with its picturesque cafés, lively bar scene, and incredible street food.

The area’s tree-lined avenues, lush greenery, and ivy-covered balconies add to its charm, making it a top spot for dining and admiring colonial-era architecture—and, in our case, a DIY walking food tour that took us from Roma Norte to Colonia Condesa and back!

Our food tour began by literally crossing the road to Churrería El Moro for some delicious churros.

But it was too early in the morning for C to enjoy something sweet, so we decided to move on and look for something savoury instead. (but only after I destroyed the yummy churros lol)

As we wandered toward our next stop, we found ourselves needing a restroom—and that’s how we stumbled upon Casa Melibea. You gotta love how spontaneous, unplanned moments can sometimes lead to the best discoveries.

This cosy street-side café, hidden in a tree-lined neighbourhood, had a relaxing vibe. The outdoor seating, small tables, and greenery created a peaceful atmosphere. Beyond the coffee and baked treats, they also sold clothing and art.

Our next stop was La Esquina Del Chilaquil, where we enjoyed one of the most delicious and filling tortas I’ve ever had.

From there, we headed to El Ilusionista Café, a hidden gem in a quieter part of town. Instead of my usual mocha, I tried a Cortado, a balanced coffee made with equal parts espresso and steamed milk.

The vibe here was relaxed—young people chatting, some on laptops taking advantage of the free WiFi, and even a few dogs wandering by.

After a quick rest, we were ready for the highlight of our food tour—Panadería Rosetta. Famous for its freshly baked pastries, the place was buzzing with activity. While we had hoped to sit outside, we were told we’d need a reservation, so we grabbed some baked goodies to go and strolled back toward our hotel.

We stopped by a fountain on the way to enjoy the delicious treats, which made for the perfect end to our day of food and exploration.

Unfortunately, I have no video footage of any of this, as I lost the memory card in my phone when I returned to Sydney. I had plans to turn the videos into a YouTube-style travel vlog, and losing all those memories was a tough blow.

So, instead, here’s the video that inspired me to go to Roma Norte in the first place: 

Our evening was spent celebrating our friend Ibérica’s birthday, someone we had met at the World Domination Summit in Portland in 2022. We joined her and a small group of friends for dinner at Antolina, a well-known restaurant specialising in Oaxacan dishes with modern twists (just another reminder that Oaxaca is indeed the gastronomical heart of Mexico).

The restaurant is praised for its unique flavour combinations and beautiful presentations, making it a popular spot for both locals and tourists. I decided to go all out and tried a taco with crickets—surprisingly, it wasn’t too bad!

This dinner turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip—it was a chance to connect with a vibrant expat community of entrepreneurs and adventurers living in Mexico City. The energy in the room was infectious, and I left feeling inspired by the creativity and passion of everyone I met.

Day 2: Teotihuacan—A Journey Back in Time

On our second day, we ventured beyond the city to explore the ancient wonders of Teotihuacan, one of Mexico’s most famous archaeological sites. I had specifically booked the Teotihuacan Early Morning Tour to beat the crowds and avoid the midday heat.

The tour was everything I had hoped for and more. As we wandered through the site, our guide, Frank, led us through landmarks like the Quetzalcóatl Temple, Avenue of the Dead, and the Moon Pyramid. Though we didn’t climb the Pyramid of the Sun, we snapped some great selfies in front of it.

One of my highlights was standing on the Adosada platform, built in front of the Temple of Quetzalcoátl. Frank explained that this platform was likely constructed to protect the temple’s intricate carvings and historical significance. Climbing those steep steps in the early morning and taking in the sheer scale of the site was mind-blowing.

The tour also took us to the Quetzalpaplotl Palace, which transported me back in time. The palace, adorned with the Quetzal (feathered bird) and Papálotl (butterfly) motifs, was both a residential and sacred space. Walking through its underground areas, I felt a deep connection to the ancient civilisation that once called Teotihuacan home.

We ended the tour with a mezcal tasting before our kind tour guide, and driver dropped us off at a local market so we could go hunting for gifts for our family.

The day left me in awe of Teotihuacan’s history, from its political significance to the everyday lives of the people who centuries ago lived and traded there. Standing in a place so rich with cultural depth and history was humbling.

Travel Tips for Mexico City

• Explore Neighbourhoods: While we only had time to explore Roma Norte, Mexico City is filled with other must-see areas, like Coyoacán, known for its bohemian vibe and Frida Kahlo Museum, La Condesa for its lush parks and chic cafes, and Centro Histórico, the heart of the city with stunning landmarks like the Zócalo and the Metropolitan Cathedral. Be sure to explore beyond just one neighbourhood if you have time!

• Eco-Bici Rentals: Roma Norte has Eco-Bici stations every few blocks, making renting a bike easy and affordable. A one-day rental costs just 123 MXN pesos, and it gives you unlimited rides of up to 45 minutes within 24 hours.

• SIM Card: If you’re staying for a while, I recommend buying a prepaid SIM card from OXXO, which is like the 7-Eleven of Mexico.

• Getting Around: Didi is a reliable and often more affordable alternative to traditional taxis. Public transport, including the metro, is also a cheap and efficient option, but we didn’t have time to try it out on this trip.

• Language: Many people in Mexico City speak English, but knowing basic Spanish phrases can make your interactions smoother and more enjoyable.

Final Reflections on Mexico

Our three weeks in Mexico were a whirlwind of culture, cuisine, and unforgettable experiences. From the lively wedding celebrations in Oaxaca to the peaceful beaches of Puerto Escondido and, finally, the wonders of Mexico City, this trip gave us much-needed time to heal, reflect, and explore. Wish we had more time!

Beach Bliss in Puerto Escondido

After our cultural deep dive in Oaxaca, we were ready to embrace the laid-back vibes of Puerto Escondido. This beach town, known for its surf spots and stunning sunsets, was the perfect place to relax and recharge.

The 3-hour bus ride from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido felt like a journey through time and space, with rocky cliffs, towering cacti, and deep valleys unfolding before us. As the bus curved around a final bend, the first sight of the ocean gleamed like a distant promise—a breathtaking view that instantly made the long trip worth it.

(Sadly I lost the memory card that had most of my photos from this leg of the trip. I’m crushed!)

Where We Stayed

We split our 10-day stay between two areas:

• El Centro: Our hotel (Hotel Villas Xaiba) was super chill and located within walking distance to great restaurants and Playa Carrizalillo, a perfect beach for swimming.

• La Punta: For the second half of our stay, we booked an Airbnb in the quieter La Barra, about a 20-25 minute walk from La Punta beach area. The peace and serenity were unmatched, though it meant we did a lot of walking (which isn’t a bad thing). Here are some photos from the Airbnb listing:

Highlights of Puerto Escondido

Our time in Puerto Escondido was filled with moments of relaxation, exploration, and connection with the natural beauty around us. Here are some of the highlights:

• Playa Carrizalillo: My fave beach in Puerto Escondido hands-down. As we descended the steep stairs, the view of the turquoise bay below took our breath away. The water was inviting, cool against the warm air, and you could spend hours floating, swimming, and just soaking in the sun. The playful waves lulled us into a state of pure relaxation, and for those precious moments, the rest of the world seemed to disappear.

• Mazunte Day Trip: On our last day in El Centro, we embarked on an adventure to the quiet town of Mazunte. The journey itself was a story—riding a local bus packed with locals, then hopping into the back of a pickup truck with strangers who became instant travel buddies. As we reached Mazunte, the nearly deserted beach stretched out before us, the waves lapping softly at the shore. We shared a simple but delicious meal overlooking the ocean, the sea breeze tangling our hair as we talked about life and dreams. Before heading back, we stopped by a coconut vendor and had fresh, cold coconuts. Refreshing even without a straw due to the town's plastic ban.

• In hindsight, I wish we had more time to explore Mazunte and surrounding towns. For instructions on how to get to Mazunte from Puerto Escondido refer to this excellent guide.

• Cindy’s Birthday Celebration: I planned for Cindy’s birthday to be a day full of surprises and unique experiences. We started with a late lunch at Chicama, a popular Peruvian seafood restaurant in La Punta. The moment we stepped inside, we were enveloped in the lively energy of the place - the lively vibe, and the fun staff who danced and performed tricks like bartenders in a Tom Cruise movie. We were led to a table on the sand-covered floor, where we kicked off our shoes and let the sand tickle our toes. The ceviche pescodor arrived, a beautiful plate of fresh fish marinated in lime and spices. With the first bite, a burst of flavors danced on our tongues, and we knew we were in for a treat. After lunch, we strolled through La Punta, the waves crashing nearby as we explored the shops. But then the sky darkened, and the rain came down in sheets. Laughing, we ran for cover to a nearby hotel, where we waited for over an hour for our evening tour pickup. Despite the rain, nothing could dampen our spirits.

• Laguna de Manialtepec: The bioluminescent lagoon tour was the perfect ending to Cindy’s birthday. The journey there was filled with anticipation, as we braved the cold rain and huddled together on the boat, shivering under our jackets. But the moment we slipped into the warm water, all the discomfort melted away. The lagoon glowed around us, each movement creating ripples of light that danced on the surface like stars fallen to Earth. Cindy, who had been hesitant at first, joined me in the water, and we floated there, spellbound by the magic of it all. It felt like we were swimming in a dream, and for that brief time, the world was a place of pure wonder. There are only thirty-five bioluminescent lagoons in the world, and experiencing one in Mexico was truly special.

Travel Tips for Puerto Escondido

• Where to stay: Splitting your stay between El Centro and La Punta gives you a varied experience of Puerto Escondido, allowing you to enjoy both the tranquil and lively sides of this beautiful destination. If party vibe is more your thing, head to Playa Zicatela. 

• Transportation:

  • Getting a Didi ride from El Centro to our Airbnb in La Barra was easy but expensive. However, finding a Didi from La Barra to Centro was nearly impossible. We eventually got one, but it was costly. Our Airbnb provided taxi numbers, which came in handy when we couldn’t get a Didi.

  • I considered renting a scooter in El Centro, but after learning there was no insurance coverage, I decided against it. In hindsight, having a scooter would have been handy to save us all the walking, especially on super hot days. There are multiple rental spots in Puerto Escondido to grab a scooter or a popular ATV from if you’re keen.

• Currency Exchange: Currency exchange was nonexistent in Puerto Escondido. ATMs can be problematic, so bring plenty of Mexican pesos. You can pay by card at some places, but cash is king.

• Sim Card: Our friend Nikky suggested we buy a 1-month prepaid data-only SIM card from OXXO (similar to 7-Eleven). I picked one up at the Mexico City airport when we landed. Coverage was good in Mexico City and mostly good in Oaxaca, but terrible in Puerto Escondido.

• Groceries:

  • We found a local vendor selling fruits and veggies on the sidewalk in front of a school (Primaria Narciso Mendoza) in La Barra de Colotepec. There’s also a supermarket about 5 mins walk up the road called "MI SÚPER PRECIO" where we bought drinks and other groceries to save money.

  • Moringa Fresh and Wild: This health food store by La Punta beach is a gem! We picked up ginger kombucha and were able to return the glass bottle the next day. They offer vegan and gluten-free options, cakes, and power balls.

• Food Highlights:

  • Chicama: I’ve already spoken about our experience in Cindy’s Birthday section earlier. Dining here is a MUST when in Puerto Escondido.

  • D'Coral Restaurante: A local gem with a 4.7-star rating. We stumbled upon this place on our first night in La Barra. The terrace upstairs offers a cool breeze and a nice view. Check it out here.

  • Amoki Jr. La Casa Del BIG Burrito: We discovered this spot by the beach in La Punta and loved the burrito so much we returned on our last night to try another. The burritos are huge and yummy, so we split one between us, which was more than enough.

  • Dulce Tierra La Punta: A popular cafe and bakery chain known for its coffee and croissants. We went there for breakfast on our final morning in Puerto Escondido. The mocha was decent, and the croissant was a nice treat. We often saw customers on their laptops inside, taking advantage of the free Wi-Fi and getting their digital nomad on whenever we walked past in the afternoons.

Mexico: A Breath of Fresh Air Amidst Life's Challenges

When life feels overwhelming, sometimes the best remedy is to step away and immerse yourself in new surroundings.

After a tough few months — slow business and the heartache of losing my father-in-law — my wife and I needed a break.

More than a year ago, when we were living in Danang, Vietnam, we were invited to my buddy George Siosi Samuel’s wedding in Oaxaca, Mexico. Initially, we were excited about the trip, but as my father-in-law's condition worsened, we were uncertain about going.

We didn’t know how long we would have with him and needed to be in Sydney to support the family, visit the hospital, and help with everything. Ultimately, after his passing, we honoured our commitment and took the trip, believing it might be a perfect opportunity to escape, heal, and recharge.

We spent three weeks exploring Mexico from June 19th to July 12th, 2024, escaping Sydney’s winter for the summer in Mexico, another reason we were glad we went.

The Journey Begins

This trip was different from any we’ve taken before.

Usually, my wife handles the planning, but I took the lead this time. I booked all the accommodations, planned our activities, and handled the details.

My goal was to ease the burden on my wife, especially since we’d be celebrating her birthday in Mexico. It took 36 hours to get from Sydney to Oaxaca—starting with a flight to Mexico City and a 9-hour bus ride to Oaxaca. 

The Welcome in Oaxaca

Upon our arrival in Oaxaca, we were welcomed by the city’s vibrant energy.

We checked into our Airbnb and went in search of coffee and breakfast when, only two blocks away, we saw an eye-catching mural featuring a hummingbird. As we paused to admire the artwork, a local on a bicycle stopped to tell us how the mural came to be and the cultural significance of the symbols.

It was a beautiful introduction to the city and its rich culture.

Oaxaca: Culture, Tradition, and Celebration

Oaxaca, renowned for its distinctive contributions to food, political activism, and art, is a cultural treasure in Mexico. Known as "The Land of the Seven Moles," it offers a rich culinary heritage featuring unique dishes like tlayudas, chapulines, and the famous mezcal (a distilled alcoholic beverage made from agave).

Oaxaca Magica Tour

We embarked on the Oaxaca Magica Tour the day before the wedding—a full-day adventure that became a trip highlight.

• Booking: Arranged through WhatsApp via a tour operator recommended by our Airbnb host.

• Departure: 8:00 AM from Lescas Tours Oaxaca office, in front of the Zócalo Square Cathedral.

• Itinerary:

  • Tule Tree: A 2,000-year-old cypress tree. Although most of the tour group paid a donation to get closer to the tree, C did what C does—she found a group of elder locals doing a group fitness class nearby and joined in the dancing! I took videos and photos, of course. 

  • Teotitlan del Valle: a town famous for its natural dyes and wool rugs. We were treated to a fascinating demonstration of how the locals use insects, flowers, and roots to create vibrant colours using pre-Hispanic techniques. The skill and artistry involved were truly impressive.

  • Mitla: Explored the second most important archaeological site in Oaxaca. It was raining cats and dogs by the time we arrived, so we didn’t do as much exploring the site as we’d liked. We managed to climb some steps and crawl through one of the ancient ruins to get a selfie, though!  

  • Lunch: We skipped the buffet restaurant and enjoyed our snacks while I enjoyed a traditional hot chocolate.

  • Hierve el Agua: Despite the rain, this was the best part of the tour. The surreal aqua pools and rock formations were otherworldly, making us feel like we’d landed on another planet. Hierve el Agua is one of two petrified waterfalls in the world, which means you can see a cascading waterfall that appears frozen over rocks. (C and I totally missed it because we didn’t see any signs pointing us to it, nor did anyone from our tour tell us - doh!)

  • Mezcal Tasting: We learned about the mezcal-making process, sampled about eight different shots of mezcal each and bought a couple of bottles as gifts. Watching Cindy get buzzed from the tastings added a fun twist to the day.

George & Nikky's Wedding

George and Nikky, who live in Oaxaca, chose this vibrant city for their wedding due to its lively culture and stunning scenery. It was a natural choice for a destination wedding for family and friends, and I’m so glad they shared Oaxaca with us.

Wedding Highlights:

• Venue: Cardenal Oaxaca Social Venue with vibrant, multicoloured ceiling decor and elegant settings.

• Ceremony: Held on an outdoor lawn, George delivered his vows first in Spanish (after months of lessons with a tutor he found online) and then in English. Nikky’s vows were beautiful, too. George's friend and former colleague Giulianna was both MC and celebrant and with her humorous quips and stories, she did an amazing job. I’m not gonna lie there were definitely a few tears shed (and I’m not just referring to the groom and bride!).

• Traditional Calenda Parade: After the ceremony, a traditional Calenda was waiting to lead guests through Oaxaca’s old and charming streets. The procession featured giant paper mache dolls resembling the bride and groom. Everyone participated in dancing on a walking tour full of music, colour, and joy. As we danced down the cobblestone streets of Oaxaca and around the block, a couple of ladies handed out handmade wooden shot glasses and poured unlimited shots of local Mezcal. It was a spectacle. I’ve never experienced a wedding parade like this! 

• Reception: A 10-piece mariachi band kicked off the evening, followed by a three-course meal, speeches, and dancing.

• Menu: Featured ceviche with hibiscus, chicken with Oaxacan black mole, and dark chocolate mousse or mini churros.

• First Dance: Following the speeches, the couple shared their first dance. Their good friend and professional singer Jo Sarah, who travelled from the Netherlands for the occasion, performed live.

The wedding venue and setup are so stunning, right?

Just look at those gigantic paper-mache dolls of the bride and groom!

Shoutout to George: The groom, who happens to be one of the best community builders I know, had the brilliant idea of using WhatsApp’s Community features to connect wedding guests based on their interests, share local travel tips, and create a sub-group for family and guests to share photos and videos from the wedding. This made communication easy and fostered a sense of community among the guests before, during, and after the event. Brilliant.

Lucha Libre

We joined George, Nikky, and other wedding guests the following night for an electrifying night of lucha libre Mexican wrestling. It was entertaining in a crazy-wrestlers-jumping-into-the-crowd-and-beating-each-other-up kind of way. After the wrestling, we all went to a local spot for tacos, which was awesome!

Other Oaxaca Highlights

Our time in Oaxaca wasn’t just about the wedding. We also enjoyed:

• Exploring Local Cafes: One funky place we discovered the morning we arrived was Cafeto Cacao. They served delicious croissants, and I had my first Mexican-style mocha with "leche" (milk). They also serve a version with "agua" (water). The space had natural lighting and a great vibe.

• Couple’s Massage: A relaxing experience that helped us unwind after the long journey.

• Visiting the Jardín Etnobotánico de Oaxaca: The Ethnobotanical Garden displays hundreds of plant species, all native to Oaxaca. We were joined by our new friend, who we met at George and Nikky's wedding.

• Cleansing Ritual with a Curandero: C and I visited a healer, or "Curandero," who performed limpias, a cleansing ritual using a raw egg in its shell, burning sage and natural herbs. The limpias is believed to rid individuals of negative energies or influences. It was a unique experience that added a spiritual dimension to our trip.

• Discovering Local Food: We indulged in a delicious Oaxacan lunch at Comedor Chabelita, located inside Mercado 20 de Noviembre (local market), just two blocks from the Zócalo. For just 305 pesos, we had the Tlayuda Especial (Tlayuda with Oaxacan cheese, beef steak, pork steak, and Mexican pork sausage). We also found a street vendor selling BBQ corn on the cob dipped with some kind of cheese (mozzarella?) and chilli sauce—it was so good!

Travel Tips for Oaxaca:

• Local Transportation: Oaxaca's city centre is pedestrian-friendly, making walking a great way to explore. For longer distances, taxis are available; agree on the fare beforehand or ensure the meter is used. Cash is typically required for taxi rides. You can also use the ridesharing app Didi, which I recommend as you usually get better rates than taxis.

• Cash and Payments: While some places accept credit cards, many local markets and smaller establishments prefer cash, so it's wise to carry pesos.

• Language: While many people in tourist areas speak English, learning a few basic Spanish phrases can enhance your experience and interactions with locals.

The Digital Library Revolution Is Here - Are You Paying Attention?

The Rise of Ebook Lending Apps

Let's be honest: when did you last set foot in your local library?

My wife and I frequent our local library weekly, but for many of our friends, it's been ages since they've browsed the dusty shelves and shushed the rowdy kids.

But the library scene has been going through a major glow-up lately, thanks to the meteoric rise of digital library software.

When I was working at a new library yesterday, I realised just how popular these platforms have become. I noticed pamphlets advertising three different ebook and audiobook apps: BorrowBox, Libby, and Hoopla.

This got me curious - how do these companies make money? How big is the market for digital library software?

Today, I returned to my usual library (and hands down the best library in Sydney — of course, I’m biased) and logged onto my member portal to see which apps they offered. I discovered that my local library offers a whopping four different digital lending apps.

Then I wondered, “What’s the difference between each of these apps?”

So I asked the librarian, and here’s what I learned:

• All platforms discussed offer a similar basic service: providing access to various titles. Users can expect a functional interface where they can check out items, which vary in borrowing duration from 14 to 21 days.

• Platform-Specific Features:

  • BorrowBox: Known for having more copies of titles, which reduces wait times for popular books.

  • Hoopla: Offers unlimited copies of titles, ensuring minimal to no waiting period.

  • Indie Reads: Focuses on Australian authors and is run by the State Library, making it unique in its regional focus.

  • Libby: Functions similarly to others with possibly some variations in title availability.

• Content Availability Variance:

  • While most titles are available across platforms, the type of content (e.g., audiobooks vs. eBooks) and the specificity of topics (e.g., niche subjects like aviation) might vary. Hoopla might have a wider variety of more niche subjects compared to others like BorrowBox.

• Access and Cost:

  • Access to these platforms is free as long as you have a library card. Logging in through your library portal allows access to the digital resources without any additional cost.

• Ease of Use:

  • All platforms are user-friendly, designed to be straightforward with simple log-in and

I also found a subreddit r/audiobooks and a thread specifically about BorrowBox. Here are some of the user reviews:

The Numbers Don't Lie

On further digging, I was able to uncover some interesting data. Whilst I couldn’t locate specific revenue figures, this gives us some indication of the market size:

• BorrowBox received nearly 329,000 website visits in April (Source: SEMrush)

• Average BorrowBox user session duration: Over 8 minutes (Source: SEMrush)

• Global library software market expected value by 2028: $3.76 billion (Business Research Insights - April 2024)

• Projected annual growth rate: Nearly 2% (Business Research Insights - April 2024)

• In 2020, the Govt of Ireland invested an additional €200,000 in eBooks and eAudiobooks in response to increased demand for online public library service.

The Value of Public Libraries

According to Australian Library and Information Association data:

In 2018 to 2019 there were 1,410 public library branches, 110 million customer visits and 9 million registered library members. Total expenditure on public libraries was $1.33 billion or the equivalent of $52.38 per Australian. Independent studies have shown that for every dollar invested in public libraries, there is a $2.90 return in terms of community benefits.

Business Model and Profit in Digital Lending

It turns out that digital library solutions like OverDrive, BorrowBox, and Libby are being embraced worldwide as a convenient way for book lovers to indulge their reading habits from anywhere.

For major players like BorrowBox, developed by Bolinda Digital, the business model revolves around:

• Subscription fees from libraries to access platforms

• Revenue from website advertising

• Income from additional content licensing

Lockdown Fueled the Digital Shift

What's fueling this digital lending frenzy among libraries? The pandemic lockdowns from January 2019 to December 2021 were a major catalyst. While the use of physical library collections decreased during lockdowns in places like New South Wales, Australia, the usage of electronic collections soared. This upward trend for electronic library materials has continued post-lockdown. (Source: Charles Sturt University, June 2022)

But it's not just circumstantial—these digital platforms also offer inherent benefits for libraries. With limited physical space and budgets, digital lending provides seamless access to a vastly larger catalogue of titles. Not to mention streamlining resource management and remotely reaching more patrons. It's a win-win, really.

As a writer, I can't help but appreciate how digital libraries are making books more accessible than ever before. Nothing warms my heart like imagining little bookworms worldwide-devouring stories on their tablets and smartphones with just a few clicks.

I can’t wait to load up some audiobooks on my Samsung Galaxy and listen on my next run, commute or long drive!

Lessons for Entrepreneurs

So, what can we learn from the digital library renaissance? Here are three key takeaways:

1. Convenience and Remote Access: Don't underestimate the demand for convenience and remote access, even for traditional services like libraries. If you can make something easier for customers, they'll likely hop on board.

2. Tech and Digital Trends: Keep an eye on developing tech and digital trends that could disrupt your industry. The library industry adapted by going digital during lockdowns to survive.

3. Innovative Solutions: With the right innovative solution and business model, you can breathe new life into even the most old-fashioned markets and offerings. Digital libraries have totally reinvented the reading experience while creating new revenue streams.

4. Identify the Bigger Customer and Opportunity: A clever move from these apps is to sell to the libraries and understand that governments are investing in them for public benefits (library members get free access). This makes me think of Robin Hood—"steal from the rich, give to the poor" (not quite the same, but you get the idea).

5. Social Good Can Be Profitable: Digital library solutions show businesses can be profitable while contributing to social good. Providing free access to knowledge through public libraries creates a significant social impact, proving profitability and social responsibility can go hand in hand.

Stay Informed and Engaged

Keep an eye out for what's happening in your local area and services. There's plenty of opportunity if you pay attention.

👍 3 THINGS THAT CAUGHT MY ATTENTION

1/ Watch: Introducing ChatGPT 4o

This week OpenAI announced GPT-4o - their “new flagship model that can reason across audio, vision, and text in real time.”

(“o” stands for “omnichannel” - you’re welcome!)

OpenAI says GPT-4o matches ChatGPT-4 Turbo performance when it comes to text in English and code, with significant improvement in text in non-English languages. It's also much faster than GPT-4 and better at vision and audio understanding compared to existing models.

Already available for most plus subscribers, slowly rolling out over the coming weeks for free ChatGPT users.

The announcement was made via a live video demo (which, in my opinion, was a mix of wow and cringe).

Anyways, it’s definitely impressive - the demos that stood out to me were:

• Helping a student to learn math (makes me wonder how this will impact teachers and education) and

• Acting as a real-time translator. They had one person speaking Italian and the other in English, and chatGPT was able to translate both languages live, aiding both individuals in understanding the other.

I tested the language-translation function in Vietnamese at dinner with my wife and family, and whilst it's not perfect, I can see the potential for the next time I visit Vietnam. This functionality will make travelling a completely different experience for everyone in the near future, so that’s huge.

I also tried translating into the Lao language, but as I expected, it sucked (even Google Translate sucks for the Lao language).

We've Been Sold a Lie on "Ikigai"

When I first stumbled upon the ikigai Venn diagram—where passion, mission, vocation, and profession converge—it seemed like a blueprint for fulfilling life.

However, as time passed, this model became a source of stress rather than inspiration. The pressure to weave my primary income source into my sole joy source was immense.

It reminds me of my days as a salsa enthusiast. I used to dance socially a couple of times a week and even taught classes at my local church. Initially, turning my hobby into a paying gig was thrilling, but slowly, as it became more of a job, the joy waned and eventually extinguished. After 14 years, I still don’t enjoy salsa dancing (much to my wife’s disappointment).

What is Ikigai Really?

In Japanese, "ikigai" combines "iki" (life) and "gai" (worth), referring to what gives your life meaning—something beyond just professional success.

True ikigai is about finding joy and fulfilment daily, not only through career achievements but also through simple pleasures that bring happiness and significance.

The Misinterpretation

The popular ikigai diagram that pitches a blend of passion, mission, vocation, and profession is fundamentally flawed.

In Japan, ikigai is understood as a holistic approach to life—embracing activities that bring intrinsic satisfaction rather than segmenting life into compartments.

Examples of Real Ikigai Activities

Consider these activities that many Japanese regard as their ikigai:

• Gardening: Cultivating beauty and sustenance every day.

• Tea Ceremony: Emphasising mindfulness and respect through traditional rituals.

• Calligraphy: Combining discipline and creativity in the art of writing.

• Volunteering: Creating a sense of purpose and community through service.

• Cooking for Family: Nourishing both body and soul with daily meals.

For me, my ikigai lies in simple joys like riding my bike through the city, especially near nature, bushwalking, swimming at the beach, travelling with my wife, teaching, facilitating engaging workshops, and partaking in community events like free hugs. Even playing with my nephews fills me with joy.

Why Does This Matter?

Embracing the real meaning of ikigai could change how we view our lives, prompting us to find satisfaction in the mundane rather than chasing monumental achievements. It's about appreciating the beauty in our daily routines.

Aligning Business with Inner Wealth

Defining personal success and wealth

Reflecting on my life whilst lying in a hospital bed after my brain surgery, I realised the traditional path to success I'd been following—chasing grades, a corporate career, and material wealth—left me unfulfilled. 

The pursuit felt increasingly empty despite the societal applause it garnered. 

It took some seismic life events to shake me from that linear pursuit of society's narrow view of success: 

• Watching my father lose his career after emerging technology and company profit motives rendered his contribution “redundant”. 

• Experiencing my own corporate burnout that resulted in a bacterial infection in my brain and consequent brain surgery.  I was burnt out, overworked, and questioning what it was all for.

• The premature death of my mother at the young age of fifty-five. Mum had sacrificed returning to her family in Laos for decades to give Dad and me a better life. Thankfully, she did go back once to visit them in the village. 

• Losing my “secure” corporate job when the Global Financial Crisis hit. 

Sudden awakenings like these showed me how quickly circumstances can disrupt even the most carefully constructed life plans.

This led me on a journey of self-discovery, where I embraced meditation, travel, and diverse cultures, gradually shifting my values towards purpose, impact, and genuine connections over material gains.

As I navigate the entrepreneurial landscape, my focus has shifted from conforming to societal expectations to forging my path based on personal growth, flexibility, and creativity. 

This journey taught me that true wealth isn't measured by financial success alone but by the richness of our internal life and the legacy we leave behind. It's about crafting a life that's in harmony with our deepest values, not one dictated by external pressures or predefined metrics of success. 

The pitfalls of external validation

The greatest pitfall I've encountered is getting caught in the trap of external validation - chasing accomplishments and business models that external forces (family members, friends, teachers, colleagues, media and society) deem "successful" rather than what truly resonates with me. 

When we unconsciously adopt the desires of others, we risk building something inauthentic that checks boxes outwardly but leaves us emotionally and spiritually bankrupt.

From the failed FB ads agency, to the draining coaching hustle, followed by the soulless content agency, each endeavour resulted from mimicking someone else's idea of what I should want rather than manifesting my authentic aspirations. 

The harsh reality is that so much of what we chase stems from unconscious social influences shaping our aspirations before we even realise it. There’s a term for this “Mimetic desire”, i.e. wanting something simply because we've witnessed others desiring it.

I struggled with the deep-seated misbelief that real success meant following a predetermined path—hitting specific metrics and emulating others' business models. But in buying into those external narratives, I neglected to listen to my inner voice about what truly inspires and excites me to wake up each morning.

It was a painful but invaluable series of lessons. 

Lifestyle design isn't about checking boxes or imitating societal expectations. It's about boldly defining success on your own terms - creating something from the heart, led by passion over pressure. Only then can you build a fulfilling venture that energises rather than depletes you.

Am I still learning to block out the noise and resist those unconscious pulls toward chasing the wrong aspirations? Most definitely.

But I'm getting better at separating my authentic desires from the inauthentic ones programmed by external forces. The most challenging undertaking is looking inward to create something deeply nourishing and built to last.

So pause and ask yourself: Are the pursuits I'm chasing aligned with my soul's yearnings (i.e., is this thing truly lighting me up?), or have I unconsciously adopted someone else's " success " model?

Aligning business goals with personal values

After years of grinding at the frantic pace of running a content agency, I was burned out and questioning everything. The hustle-at-all-costs mentality I had subscribed to ended up draining me spiritually, physically, and mentally. Something had to change.

So, when the pandemic first upended our lives in 2020, I began reassessing my priorities. My wife and I spontaneously decided to escape the rut of our Sydney routine in 2022, packing up for an adventure in Danang, with its idyllic beaches and lower cost of living. As I disconnected from client work for four months, I rediscovered what truly brought me joy. 

It was the first breath of fresh air I'd taken in years.

Slowly, through self-reflection and recharge, a new philosophy crystallised: intentional, sustainable growth. Not the stereotypical hustle-and-grind approach that had fueled my past burnouts.

I craved the freedom and flexibility to prioritise my well-being—mentally, physically, and in my most cherished personal relationships. I made my wife and life together the priority, not an afterthought.  

For too long, I had subconsciously absorbed limiting beliefs about being "successful" in business. I thought I needed huge teams and money-hungry growth at all costs to have an impact. Looking back, this overpowered my core values.

As I shook off those ingrained notions in Danang, a new path emerged: Build a boutique one-person business tailored to my lifestyle and passions.—no more growth for growth's sake. 

I’d focus on a mix of:

• Offering high-income skills (copywriting, content marketing, marketing strategy) in a packaged solution that solved a high-value problem for clients

• Smart positioning and strategy 

• Leveraging outsourced virtual assistant support

• Utilising evolving tech like AI to enhance services

• Leveraged digital products - build once, sell again and again. This book is the first step in realising this vision. 

• Recurring income streams. 

This time, I felt ready to create something leveraged that I believed could provide immense value and impact—my new path.

Of course, mindset hurdles remained. I had doubts about crafting an offer people actually wanted. I hesitated over the time investment required to build something meaningful from scratch. 

Ultimately, the upside of aligning my business with my most authentic values and lifestyle aspirations outweighed any risk.

So, this is the journey I'm undertaking now. I embrace sustainable progress over hustle and listen to my heart, not just caving to the whims of "What's going to make money quickest?" 

This fresh mindset sparked my pivot in 2023 to offering fractional Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) services. By providing strategic marketing leadership to a handful of clients, I’m on track to hit six figures in annual revenue for the first time while also enjoying more time and location freedom—two longstanding goals.

It's naive to think there won't be further obstacles laced with temptations to default to old patterns. But now, with clarity driving my intentions, I know I'm finally building toward something bigger than just business. I'm architecting a life and legacy in harmony with what matters most.

What does “freedom” mean, anyway?

Freedom consists of seven elements to me:

1. Financial Freedom - I work because I choose to, not because I have to pay the bills. Those income-producing assets are the real MVPs, allowing me to unlock the other glorious freedoms.

2. Time Freedom—Having that precious time to just BE, to connect deeply with loved ones, invest in myself, and act on causes that move my soul, whether adventuring to new corners of the world or simply being present for life's magical moments.

3. Spiritual Freedom - This one's all about plugging into my higher purpose and appreciation for each day. Greeting the world with a mind full of joy and inspiration is true bliss.

4. Location Freedom - Why be shackled to one spot when you can embrace the world? I'm free like a beautiful butterfly to live and work wherever speaks to my wandering spirit.

5. Creative Freedom—Killer ideas need space to be born and thrive, am I right? My creativity flows unbounded, and I am free to innovate and express myself in authentic, fulfilling ways.

6. Intellectual Freedom - Books, podcasts, experiences galore! My unrelenting curiosity is indulged through the freedom to learn and expand my mind constantly.

7. Ethical Freedom - Doing the right thing and living according to my values is the only way to be indeed free. No compromises, just sweet integrity everywhere I roam.

Money Mindset and Habits for Entrepreneurial Success

This year marks a milestone: my business is set to break six figures in revenue for the first time since embarking on my solo entrepreneurial journey in 2015. 

This is also a significant milestone in my wealth-building journey, as I focus on income-producing assets and investments — not just time-for-money exchange. More on this later.   

The path here wasn't straightforward—it was a mosaic of hard lessons learned, each piece a step towards financial literacy and a healthier money mindset.

Like all stories, understanding the journey starts with returning to the beginning. 

My First Money Memory

Imagine this: 

Under the kitchen table with some friends in a small unit in Campsie (a suburb eleven kilometres southwest of the Sydney CBD), a 4-year-old me watched as my parents, Laotian refugees, gambled their hard-earned money with their Lao friends. 

This early image of "easy come, easy go" money left a lasting imprint, shaping my initial understanding of financial management.

The Roots of Scarcity

Understanding my patterns and thinking around money requires understanding where my parents and grandparents came from. 

Mum and Dad grew up relatively poor in villages in Laos. Mum’s family lived several hours outside the capital city, Vientiane, and Dad’s family lived outside Luang Prabang.

Dad was one of six children in his family, and Mum was one of eight children in her family. 

During the 60s and 70s, Laos went through a financial and political revolution.

From 1962 – 1975, Laos was pulled into the Secret War. 

“America was never officially at war in Laos, but its bombing of the Southeast Asian country in the 1960s and 70s was so intense that it averaged one planeload of bombs dropping every eight minutes for a full decade.” (Source: Post Magazine)

As a young man barely out of his teens, Dad joined the army and became a soldier. 

In the 70s, my parents moved from their simple village lives in rural Laos to the big city of Vientiane, where they met. 

Escaping the incoming Communist regime, they left Laos in 1980 and spent some time being “processed” (that sounds weird to me) in a refugee camp in Thailand. After gaining sponsorship, they eventually took manual labour jobs to support our family in Australia. 

Now, you can take the kid out of the village, but you can’t take the village out of the kid (and all their beliefs, values, and behaviours).

My parents' migration journey from villages in Laos to Australia was marked by resilience in the face of adversity. Despite their hard work, their financial literacy was limited, leading to a reliance on credit, debt, and gambling as coping mechanisms. 

This backdrop was my first lesson in the value of money and the dangers of a scarcity mindset.

Gambling your money away was a common behaviour for immigrants. 

Our family moved to Cabramatta in the early 1980s, and I started Kindergarten there. So I vaguely recall some of that tumultuous time when gangs, crime, and drugs ran rampant throughout the largely South-East Asian community there.   

In recent years I learned, through a documentary about the rough 80s and 90s period in Cabramatta, about the harmful coping mechanisms of refugees who go from leaving their war-torn countries with little money to making (comparatively) lots of money in Australia.

In a journalistic piece by Connecticut Public Radio in the US titled “The Lure Of Luck: How Gambling Can Turn Addictive For Southeast Asian Refugee”, the following statistic caught my attention:

“Southeast Asian refugees are among the groups that are especially vulnerable to falling into gambling addiction, experts say. One groundbreaking study more than a decade ago in Connecticut examined a sample group of refugees from Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos — and reported their rate of gambling addiction was almost 30 times the national average.”

The situation is compounded by a lack of awareness and cultural stigma surrounding gambling addiction, making it a significant but often invisible issue within these communities.

During my late teen and young adult years - my parents and their friends spent more and more time playing pokies and other games at the local community club. For a stint, they also frequented the Sydney casino. 

Despite their gambling habits, my parents were hardworking and caring, ensuring our basic needs and a happy life in South Western Sydney.

Replicating Unhealthy Habits

As I grew older, I mimicked the financial habits I saw at home, leading to my own struggles with debt and spending. 

When I graduated from university, I went on my first big trip overseas to Europe with a few mates. We did a 37-day Contiki Tour across twelve countries and an extra two weeks with stops in Prague, Berlin, and Amsterdam. I can’t recall the exact amount spent on that trip, but I’m guessing it was around $10K. While I had some savings put aside for that trip, I also put a lot on my credit card. 

When I was in corporate, even though I was earning more than each of my parents at the time, I blew my paychecks on indulgences like eating out at fancy restaurants, drinking and partying with friends at clubs and music festivals on the weekends, trips interstate, and so on. 

The biggest money mistake? Taking out $30K in personal loan debt to pay for self-development seminars and a trip to Maui to attend a “Billionaire Bootcamp” workshop. 

They were fantastic experiences, but this "buy now, worry later" mindset kept me in debt for decades  — easy come, easy go.

Entrepreneurial Roadblocks

Those mental money blocks persisted even when I started my entrepreneurial ventures. 

In 2013, my first business partner and I made only $1,010 each for the entire year of hustling —a sobering financial reality check. 

We were hustling hard without paying ourselves a salary to cover our living expenses or build profit and real wealth for ourselves. It wasn’t sustainable, so it’s no surprise we decided to part ways after two long years together. 

Being that we were both from South East Asian families - we both had engrained in us from a young age that we had to “work hard for your money”. 

This experience and ingrained beliefs from my upbringing highlighted the critical need for a shift in how I viewed money and success.

Hitting Rock Bottom

After that business failed in 2012, I hit an emotional rock bottom.

A few years later, I hit rock bottom financially when I left my full-time job in 2015 to start a solo content service business. 

For the first three years, I earned a big, fat ZERO DOLLARS in income, and flames of insecurity roared. 

Somehow, though, the intensity of those lean years and various interactions with mentors and coaches started chipping away at old self-limiting beliefs around money.

The positive side of growing up with Lao immigrants who gambled

I want to clarify something with you. Growing up, my Lao parents' gambling taught me a lot - and it wasn’t all bad.

I learned to take risks wisely, enjoy time with friends, and adapt quickly. These lessons have been invaluable in my business, teaching me to balance risk, foster teamwork, and pivot as needed.

Their journey from escaping Communist Laos to starting afresh in an entirely new country to give our family a better chance at life also instilled in me resilience, a strong work ethic, and a deep commitment to family and community. 

Their belief in education as a pathway to a prosperous life and their ability to adapt while maintaining a strong cultural identity taught me the power of perseverance and self-awareness.

Combining their experiences of hardship and hope has given me a unique perspective. I've learned to navigate risks joyfully and adaptively, backed by the resilience, dedication, and community spirit I've inherited from them. 

This blend of traits and the sacrifices they made fuels my entrepreneurial path, making their legacy a cornerstone of my success.

My Money Angel - Cindy

Meeting Cindy in 2015 was a turning point in my life, personally and financially. 

When we got married in 2017, I was drowning in $20K of debt while she was completely debt-free. 

Her approach to my financial mess was straightforward and empowering: "Your mess, you clean it up." This tough love approach forced me to confront my financial irresponsibility head-on. 

Over the years, while my business struggled to stay above water, Cindy supported us financially with her savings and sacrificed her salary by working in my business without pay. 

Additionally, deep-seated cultural expectations played a role in this dynamic. There was an unspoken belief that Cindy, as the wife, had an obligation to support her husband's endeavours at any cost. This notion unfairly burdened her and hindered our ability to view her professional contributions through an equitable lens.

This was not easy for her, and eventually, she resigned from working in my business, having felt unappreciated for too long. Cindy prioritised our marriage over money and business. Though painful for both of us, it was undoubtedly the right move, and I thanked her for making that decision.  

Her resilience, patience, and belief in me significantly reshaped my approach to money, teaching me the value of responsibility, hard work, and the importance of a supportive partner in overcoming life's financial hurdles.

Cindy also taught me to focus on what actually matters, i.e. the people who matter most.

Marrying Cindy, who came from a place of financial responsibility, forced me to confront my unhealthy money habits head-on. Her resilience and approach to finances inspired a significant mindset shift for me.

I've committed to a payback plan for all the time she worked in my business to rectify the oversight of not compensating Cindy for her contributions. It's a necessary step towards fairness and healing in our partnership.

Cindy's impact on my life extended beyond the personal. Her principles of accountability, transparency, and mutual support are universally applicable. Whether in personal relationships, business partnerships, or solo ventures, these principles can guide us toward healthier financial habits and stronger, more supportive networks.

Remember, it's not about marrying someone to clean up your financial mess but about building a network of support that encourages you to take ownership, learn from your mistakes, and celebrate your successes.

Whether you're in a romantic partnership or not, accountability is key. Find a friend, family member, or mentor who can help you stay on track with your financial goals. Just as Cindy did for me, they don't have to fix your problems but can offer invaluable support and perspective.

Mindset Shifts That Led to Eventual Success

Several fundamental mindset shifts marked the journey from getting stuck in survival mode to financial stability and growth:

• “Value” is subjective. Regularly forcing myself to increase my rates taught me to challenge my limiting beliefs about how prospective clients might perceive the value of my service offerings. This taught me to assess my worth by the value I provide, not by self-limiting beliefs.

• Solve bigger, costlier problems. Early on, I saw myself merely as a content writer and promoted myself as one, which meant my earning potential was limited. Then, I identified a bigger issue for my clients and shifted my perspective and positioning. I became a strategic marketer, focusing on showing clients how to use content as a powerful tool that drives visitors, converts customers, and delivers fantastic ROI. This change not only expanded my skill set but significantly increased my income. 

• Choose the right clients. Not all clients, jobs, or projects are equal; only some clients deserve access to your services. Be selective about who you work with, and your income will increase. The right clients will happily pay for your top-tier services while valuing you as a key partner. Of course, this also means you must show you can deliver results.

• You get what you pitch for. Shifting your mindset from "I don't have enough time" to "I need more support" can open doors to resources and solutions you hadn't considered. How you frame and pitch your needs to the world directly influences the outcomes and opportunities that come your way. As for what you want, not what you don’t want. As one of my mentors, Glen Carlson, said, “Your pitch = your reality. Remember, you get what you pitch for, and you're always pitching.” So, think twice about what you’re pitching into the world!

• Prioritise Income-Generating Activities. Learning to value my time and focus on high-impact actions while delegating or automating low-value activities catalysed my financial growth.

• Systemise Healthy Financial Habits. Implementing structured systems like "Profit First" for business and Barefoot Investor’s “buckets” for personal finances gave me clarity and encouraged discipline. This transformed my approach to business and personal finances.

• Identify your current Level of Wealth: Recognise and adapt your strategy to your current financial stage, inspired by Roger Hamilton's "wealth lighthouse." Progress requires distinct actions at each level.

• Unlearn to Progress: Advancing to a higher wealth stage often necessitates unlearning habits that bring success at the previous level and adopting new strategies. It's about knowing when to shift gears and change direction for growth.

• Cultivate Self-Awareness: Understanding my strengths, weaknesses, and optimal energy use has been pivotal. Tools like Human Design and Wealth Dynamics have encouraged me to focus on my genius and given insights into how to best collaborate with others.

• Lead by adapting to individual styles: Learning how different personalities and preferences operate in a work environment has enhanced teamwork and productivity, guiding more effective collaboration and leadership approaches.

Adopting the right mindset shifts, consistently seeking help and feedback, and receiving guidance from mentors transformed my path. I evolved from financially struggling to thriving as a solopreneur running a profitable business.

My experience has taught me that transforming our money mindset requires personal accountability and a compassionate understanding of our backgrounds.

By acknowledging our history and proactively shaping our financial behaviours, we can pave the way for a future marked by abundance and stability, setting a new legacy for generations to come. 

Overcoming financial challenges as an entrepreneur

Tackling financial challenges is part and parcel of the entrepreneurial journey, transforming hurdles into stepping stones toward success. 

Here’s how you can approach financial challenges as an entrepreneur, broken down into actionable tips:

• Separate Personal and Business Finances: Keep your personal and business accounts distinct. This clarity is crucial for understanding your business’s profitability and managing your individual quality of life without confusion.

• Schedule Strategic Planning Time: Regularly set aside CEO time to work on your business, not just in it. Focus on strategy, systems, and pipeline development to move beyond day-to-day revenue generation.

• Embrace Delayed Gratification: Discipline yourself to reinvest profits into the business instead of taking them out too early. Avoid accumulating debt and focus on achieving a good product-market fit.

• Seek Mentorship and Adopt a Growth Mindset: Open yourself to learning from mentors and embrace new financial frameworks. A growth mindset and openness to advice can significantly speed up your progress.

• Implement Financial Systems: Use systems like Profit First to manage your finances more effectively. This practice helps make informed decisions about where to allocate resources for growth.

• Play long-term games with long-term people: Focus on building sustainable growth and enduring relationships. Avoid shiny-object syndrome and the temptation of quick cash.

Focusing on these areas will help you navigate financial challenges more effectively and build a resilient, profit-oriented business.

Closing Thoughts:

My journey from unconscious spending to financial literacy and entrepreneurial success is a testament to the power of mindset, education, and support. It reminds me that financial stability and wealth are within reach when we actively work to transform our foundational beliefs and habits about money.

Your path might be different, but the principles remain the same: seek wealth in knowledge, relationships, and experiences that enrich your life beyond the monetary.
